The original Sodi home will become a museum

(Original press release from Notimex)
TW Correspondents: Tonchi & Luisa

Thalía will have her own museum in Mexico City, where the public will be able to admire personal objects, photographs, records, awards, and trophies belonging to the singer. A project to convert the so-called "Casa de los Perros" (The Dogs’ House), Thalía’s childhood home, in the neighborhood of Santa María la Ribera into a museum dedicated to the singer was announced by her mother in a press conference in the capitol. The house has been empty for many years and is in need of considerable repairs, but this may all be resolved within the year. (Note: The news articles referred to Thalía’s mother as “Yolanda Payares, viuda de Sodi”. This is not her correct name. Yolanda Miranda Mange married Dr. Ernesto Sodi Pallares; therefore, the only Mrs. Pallares (not Payares) is Thalía’s paternal grandmother.)

From ancestral home to thalia shrine?

The large old house, which was designed and built by Thalía’s father for his growing family, would be a perfect museum since it has many rooms and outdoor spaces and is very picturesque. Besides that, Doña Yolanda has been depressed for years about how the house has been vandalized, yet she resisted selling it because of the many memories it holds for them. (However, we certainly hope that when the method of displaying all Thalía’s considerable memorabilia is selected they will keep in mind that if they are not nailed down the items will immediately disappear. The wax museum displaying Thalía’s first wax figure, dressed with authentic accessories, discovered that the fans stripped everything possible, including a finger from the statue!)

The actress’ mother also said that her daughter is very concentrated on the preparation and recording of her new album. "Thalía is doing very well, she is in New York, working hard on this new record which is going to have many surprises, with songs in French, Italian, and English,” she explained, without revealing the names of the composers working on the album. (HUH? Wait a minute, that is what we heard more than two years ago about “Arrasando”! Are they going to finally release those old songs, or are there additional songs which have been written just for this album? Or did the reporter completely misunderstand what Doña Yolanda said?)

Concerning the possibility that the singer will become a mother this year, Doña Yolanda affirmed that for the moment Thalía is so dedicated to work that she will postpone having a baby until the appropriate time for it.

Thalia to Have her Own Museum

The city of Mexico will soon have a museum dedicated to Thalia, revealed Yolanda Pallares vda. Sodi, the singer's mother today. If it will be possible, she plans to convert their ancestral home "Casa delos Perros" into the museum.

In press releases, Thalia's mother indicated that the museum, which does not have an opening date yet, will contain personal momentos of Thalia like awards, discs, photographs and clothes that she has used during her performances which her adoring fans may view and admire upclose.

As for future telenovela works of her daughter, she confirmed that Thalia, wife of pop music tycoon Tommy Mottola will not be participating in any novelas such as the highly publicized Cecelia Valdez this year. " Thalía is in New York, working on her new disc which will be filled with many surprises, with French, Italian and English songs (themes?) ", she explained.

When asked about her relationship with her vastly popular daughter now that she has been married, she replied that they are a very close family and often stay in touch with Thalia.

Thalía says her marriage is a culture exchange

In an interview by telephone with an unidentified party or parties, Thalía discussed how it feels for her to be married. Among other things, she stated that it has not cost her any work to adapt to married life with Tommy Mottola, since they both love tequila, mariachis, and the boleros.

Although the couple live mostly in New York, Thalía has said that Tommy is becoming Mexicanized. She also stated that she is not discounting the idea of getting pregnant this year because she wants to start a family and be fulfilled as a woman.

“I would love to have a baby…. Maybe this will be the year for being a mother,” she said.

• How is the marriage between a woman proud of her Mexican traditions and someone from the United States?

She is now a person who carries 2 cultures with her

“If it were that way, imagine how many cats would already have died! (??) It has seemed incredible to see how two worlds so different can be united and can combine things from each one. He adores tequila, he loves it. The two of us like to listen to boleros and mariachi. And he has already learned to speak Spanish, but the Mexican Spanish, because can you imagine, in his meetings with Latinos he speaks as he has learned it. He comes out with ‘órale’, and ‘espérate, carnal’, phrases which are very much ours.” (Note: These are also expressions which are not prudent to use with somebody you do not already have a fairly close relationship with, especially the term “carnal”)

A marriage of understanding and individual privacy • What is it that has most surprised you about him now that you are his wife?

“His capacity to respect me in my decisions, the way in which I live my life; that he respects my privacy, my times….whether it may be for writing, for doing my things. That is very beautiful. We are individuals and we know how to share… he keeps give me freedom.”

• Do you get along well with Tommy’s children?

“Of course! We all get along very well, as much my family as his, we share a lot.”

• What would you prefer to have as a woman: the power to do and decide whatever arises although you make mistakes, or sufficient intelligence to know how to decide between the correct and the incorrect?

“I already have the power and the intelligence too. What I love is to have challenges, things, even the most difficult that there are, I like most, however more on the knife’s edge they may be, it’s better. I have a team, but in the long run I always decide, I am the one who takes the responsibility, and the decision is precisely the one that tells me if it was a mistake or no. That is what makes me grow as a human being. That is how I lift myself up and I am more strong, more powerful.”

• How do you see your country now that you no longer live there?

“I have not abandoned it, I come incognito frequently and you never even find out. I see Mexico as a country that grows every day and seeks new opportunities. I feel very fortunate to carry my flag to many places.”

Thalía also talked about the experience of having known Emilio Azcárraga Milmo (the late director of Televisa) and how he would have liked to be remembered.

• You have surrounded yourself with many people older than you. What is the lesson from one of them that you will never forget and who do you remember with special affection?

“Señor (Emilio) Azcárraga Milmo, because he was a man of power, a very strong personality, everyone trembled when they saw him, and he always told me, ‘Everything you do, do it with your heart and try to do whatever the public wants.’”

(NOTE: This article has been quoted all over lately, all the way from LaBotana.com, to Despierta America and other Univision shows, and even on the local Hispanic radio stations in the US. We don’t know what was the occasion or who she was speaking to, but if you listen to excerpts from El Norte (here), you will notice she does not sound very enthusiastic and her voice is very flat and dull. We found this very untypical of Thalía. Hopefully she is not working too hard and we will soon see her as her usual exuberant self in the Lo Nuestro program next week.)

Thalia’s first advertising commercial hits the airwaves

Representatives from the soft drink company Dr. Pepper contacted Thalia and convinced her to be the Latin spokesperson in a new publicity campaign. Now the commercial she made is being broadcast on the principle networks in the United States. (Of course, the truth is that they gave Garth Brooks a much better deal, as you will read below.)

Watch out Shakira, Thalia is on her way

Other stars of Latin music, such as Shakira, Ricky Martin, and Salma Hayack have all signed with major international companies to promote products to the Hispanic world, but in the process they have also gained considerable publicity for their own careers. Thalia’s fans are thrilled that she has joined the trend and can now be seen daily on television screens all over the US.

Dr. Pepper, Thalia's thirst quencher The commercial is very short, easily under the 50 second maximum allowed by copyright laws, so we will show it in it’s entirety if we can succeed in making a video capture. Thalia is spectacular in a red dress which is cut to show off her slender figure. She looks like a cross between the famous Maria Mercedes dance dress and the Julio Iglesias “Baila Morena” video, and in fact some of the poses and gestures she makes will be very familiar. There appears to be a big party going on in a street which is clearly a Hispanic community (another video it may remind you of is Santana’s “Smooth”). Thalia descends a confetti-draped outside staircase and moves to the center of various dancing pairs as if she were the queen of the carnival. The theme song is "Se tú", which appears on the screen while Thalia refreshes herself, enjoying the flavor of the drink.

Here is the way the new publicity campaign is described on the official Dr. Pepper website:

Garth Brooks, Other Recording Artists

Advertising Campaign
Mark McGrath,
Thalia, Black Eyed Peas Also in Spotlight;
Focus to be on Individuality, Originality and Personality

DALLAS, TEXAS, Oct. 30, 2001 – Dr Pepper will become Garth Brooks' first product endorsement when television advertising featuring the country music recording superstar debuts early next month as part of a integrated marketing plan and promotional tie-in supporting the November 13 release of his Scarecrow CD.

Garth Music, a 30-second commercial in a music video format, will begin airing November 3 on network, cable and local television, and will feature Brooks singing a Dr Pepper tune with lyrics such as Be you, do what you do, Dr Pepper.

Commercials featuring Garth Brooks will be the only ones Dr Pepper airs during a 90-day transition period from the 2001 campaign to the brand's 2002 advertising. Some of those airings will carry a five-second tag promoting the Scarecrow CD. In addition, the soft drink company is collaborating with two mass merchandisers for combined Dr Pepper and Scarecrow CD displays. From November 13-21, a nationwide, in-store redeemable coupon will offer $2.00 off the price of the Scarecrow CD when purchased with two 12-packs of Dr Pepper at all Kmart stores. Another promotion will take place regionally in 560 southwest Walmart stores. A specially produced Dr Pepper/Garth Brooks promotional standup cutout display will be the point-of-sale piece in support of these promotions. Scarecrow is the first studio recording Brooks has released in four years.

"We're combining two great brands in this campaign, Dr Pepper and Garth Brooks," stated John Clarke, Dr Pepper Chief Advertising Officer. "The campaign celebrates originality and being true to yourself. The new tagline sums up the campaign nicely – ‘Be you. Dr Pepper'. It's also a thrill to have Garth as a Dr Pepper spokesman because he's a real Dr Pepper drinker," explained Clarke.

"I've been a Dr Pepper fan forever," said Brooks, who described the first commercial he shot for the brand as "a slice of America on film." In the past, other soft drink companies approached Brooks, yet he opted not to endorse them because he wanted to promote something that "I actually have in my house."

Garth Life will be the other 30-second commercial for Dr Pepper, and will be part of the brand's 2002 Be You "tribute" campaign. It will feature Brooks as the everyday person he is when at home in Oklahoma.

In three additional 30-second commercials, Mark McGrath of the group Sugar Ray, Thalia and Blacked Eyed Peas perform tributes to past recording artists such as rock and roll great Buddy Holly (McGrath), Latin music star Tito Puente (Thalia) and jazz icons Ella Fitzgerald and Louie Armstrong (Black Eyed Peas). The campaign emphasizes the originality, individuality and personality of all recording artists featured – both past and present – and draws similarities to Dr Pepper, with its unique, one-of-a-kind taste that sets it apart from other beverages.

"Our 2002 campaign reaches out to the entire population of the United States with a message that every person counts and is unique," stated Clarke. "We are trying to connect with 12- to 34-year-old consumers in a country that is becoming more diverse each day. Through Thalia and Black Eyed Peas commercials, we reach out to Hispanic and African-American consumers, while McGrath reaches out to all fans of rock and roll. Garth Brooks reaches out to a broad cross section of consumers," added Clarke. "We haven't used celebrities in our television advertising for several years, so incorporating them now is a departure, albeit a refreshing one, from recent Dr Pepper campaigns."

This is what a Latina is all about... Natural sensuality

The campaign was created by Young & Rubicam New York, which has been Dr Pepper's advertising agency for more than three decades. In 2002, these commercials will air on the ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, UPN and WB networks, as well as MTV, Comedy Central, BET, E!, TBS, Fx, USA, TNT, VH1 and Lifetime cable channels, and on National Football League (NFL) and college football games and NASCAR racing.

Additionally, Dr Pepper will also advertise on high-profile television events such as the Golden Globe Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards, Latin Grammys, Teen Choice Awards, SEC and Big 12 Conference championship football games and the NFL Conference Championship games.

Dr Pepper is the leading brand in Plano, Texas-based Dr Pepper/Seven Up, Inc.'s extensive soft drink portfolio. Dr Pepper/Seven Up is the largest non-cola enterprise in North America, with about 16 percent of the carbonated soft drink market, and it is the largest division of London-based beverage and confectionery firm Cadbury Schweppes plc (NYSE: CSG). In addition to Dr Pepper, the company's other major brands include 7 UP, A&W Root Beer, Canada Dry, Sunkist, Schweppes, Squirt and Hawaiian Punch, as well as RC Cola.

(NOTE: So there is the whole story as we know it now. We have written an email to the Dr. Pepper director of marketing to find out if the commercial will ever been seen in countries outside the US.)

WE WANT THALIA !!!
Thalia's picture should be here instead. Fan's should lobby Dr. Pepper to change it now that she is their representative

Thalía denies participation in any novela

Source: El Universal Online - January 23, 2002
TW Correspondent: Tonchi & Luisa

Recently some of the communication media have been printing stories about the return of Thalía to the telenovelas, starring in a story entitled "Cecilia Valdez". Facing the insistent rumors that the singer would be at the head of this production, Thalía herself has decided to clarify that she presently does not plan to make any telenovelas, since she is totally involved with her musical career.

Through the publicity agency Consecuencias, she clarified where this rumor came from.

“Cecilia Valdez” is an original story which René Múñoz (R.I.P.) rewrote especially for her. Thalía has known about the story of "Cecilia Valdez" for approximately 5 years, when she was working on "María la del Barrio", her telenovela which René Múñoz also participated in. The actor/writer showed her and handed over the first 60 chapters of "Cecilia Valdez" and told her that the story was made so that she might interpret the protagonist. He even began to teach her the steps of the changó and some native Yoruba words, both being key elements of the script. (Cecelia was a real person who lived in Cuba).

Afterwards, approximately 2 ½ years later, Thalía and producer Carla Estrada began to talk about the possibility of making the telenovela happen; but nevertheless, despite her interest and enthusiasm, Thalía’s multiple commitments have so far not permitted her to interpret this role. The singer is aware that such an important project, such a marvelous story as "Cecilia Valdez", can’t be postponed much longer. But considering that the character was created for her, she would love to realize it in a future time, and Miami is the perfect setting.

As far as her return to the small screen, this will doubtless be under the production of Carla Estrada, who gave Thalía her first chance at a starring role in "Quinceañera" (which coincidentally was written by René Muñoz), in a character which determined her acting career and contributed to her consecration as the “Queen of the Telenovelas.” But it will be only Thalía who announces her return to the press, when SHE is ready.

In the meantime, and following the worldwide success of her record "Thalía con Banda Grandes Éxitos", the famed singer and actress is preparing what will be her new pop album, which she promises will be one of the greatest surprises of the year.

Itatí Cantoral leaving Mexico for a year

Source: Despierta America, El Gordo y La Flaca, Univisión. January 22, 2002
With notes from El Universal, January 11, 2002
TW Correspondent: Tonchi

Despite having said that she was considering moving to Miami, possibly to a house near Thalía’s on Star Island, Itatí Cantoral has instead accepted the lead role in a novela to be filmed in Brazil. She plans to move to Rio de Janeiro this month, complete with husband Eduardo Santamarina and her twin sons, which are Thalía’s godchildren. Eduardo does not have an acting role in this telenovela, yet, but he has said he will be a “house husband” while Itatí is working.

This leaves the lead role in “Aventurera” vacant. Previously it was announced that Adriana Fonseca (Lucy in “Rosalinda” and the former girlfriend of Fernando Carrillo) would take over, but it is now confirmed by Carmen Salinas that Patricia Navidad will act and dance the part instead.

Also possibly changed are the intentions, maybe announced tongue-in-cheek by the two actresses, that Thalía and Itatí intend to become pregnant at the same time sometime this year.

Her kids are growing fast

Carmen Salinas still declares, however, that Thalía will present the plaque to the theater company at their 1000th performance, which is projected for sometime around the first of April. Since the production travels all over Mexico, the city this will take place in is still not known. As fans are aware, Carmen has been in all of Thalía’s novelas, and they are very close friends.

Many wanted to see Thalía do a guest appearance in the production, but Carmen explained that would be impossible: “I don’t think it’s possible because she does not even want to act in television. I already invited her to present a plaque and it appears that she definitely accepted.“

The “farewell party” for Itatí and Eduardo will be held in Cuernavaca within a week or two, and we can expect that Thalía will attend this event, to say a temporary goodbye to her good friend. Brazilian fans can also hope that Thalía will decide to visit Itatí in Brazil before long.

Thalia has everything, Except Keys

Where is everybody! Houses, cars, monster record sales, but even with all this Thalía's needs are still simple, in this case, the keys to the house of their mother. The Mexican singer arrived for a visit and she was met with a locked door. As she did not have keys, the diva rang the bell , called by cellular phone, and finally shouted, until someone opened the door for her.

As a diva, Thalia is more used to making people wait for her. Not the other way around. She had to wait for a few minutes before someone came and opened the door. At first she tried to enter the premises the regular way: by ringing the doorbell. When that method failed, she tried calling for someone using her cellular phone to let the person (Note: possibly her mother?) know she was at the door. Finally a lady came around and opened the door for her.

The singer was actually checking on the progress of the Star Island mansion she and her husband Tommy Mottola as having built and simply dropped in for the unannounced visit.
