This will soon be RESTRICTED MIAMI AIRSPACE :D

After two years in the making, the Mottola mansion on Star Island is now ready for Thalía and Tommy to move in, and the paparazzi are working overtime. It is hard to imagine that the couple will have any privacy in their new home unless they install anti-aircraft guns on the pier; these pictures are so detailed that you can practically see into the master bedroom behind the long balcony. Furniture is being delivered, a brand new boat is already tied up at the dock, and several dozen workmen are doing the final clean-up work. The surrounding landscape has been converted into a tropical jungle bordering lush grass lawns where there were only mud puddles several months before. The large wooden security gate is installed and guarded. But from the air, pictures of the whole estate are cataloging the progress. Sources have said that, before New Year, Thalía and Tommy hosted a “Pre-Housewarming” party with the Estefans and Shakira as their guests, but we can imagine that a large formal inauguration will soon follow.

X marks the spot for Thalia's Star Island mansion

The mansion is almost at the entrance to the island. You can't miss it.

Imagine, now, that you were invited to tour the new Miami base belonging to Thalía. First, you have to know how to get there -- so take note of how you will drive across Biscayne Bay, with the Miami skyline in front of you, past several luxurious, man-made, private islands offshore, until you reach the causeway which leads to Star Island. Upon reaching the island, you will turn left, past the gate to the Estefan estate, and almost immediately reach the entrance to Thalía’s property. Here is what you will find inside………

Mottola's and Estefans: Next door neighbors

Thalia's new home in Miami will be this large ocean-side estate on Star Island, outlined by the red rectangle, which is right next door to the guesthouse on the estate of Emilio and Gloria Estefan (circled) where they used to meet while Thalia was filming "Rosalinda".

A cabana thatched by palm leaves and open on all sides to the fresh sea breeze is a feature to the side of the main house. Surrounded by newly-planted palm trees and tropical flowers, it may be intended as a meditation spot where Thalia can enjoy solitude, provided she can avoid the helicopters full of paparazzi.  Yoga temple for Thalia?

There is a waterfall somewhere here You can't see it very well because of the shadows created by the roof, but the house has white marble walls surrounding in the living room on the main floor. There is also supposed to be a floor-to-ceiling waterfall here as well.

The rear of the mansion is actually the front for the Mottolas, whose master bedroom faces outward over the lovely pool area.  A jacuzzi and fountains are on the patio below their private balcony, and they have an unrestricted view of the ocean What a relaxing sight !

Wood carvings are a dominant design in the house All the access doors of the house appear to be grand wooden portals, elaborately carved. Even the gate from the patio is in that style.

To separate the two-story building at the front of the Mottola property from the house where Emilio Estefan's parents live, a dense wall of trees has been planted. As large and mature as these trees appear, none of them were here 5 months ago. Almost paparazi proof. Maybe a few more trees?

Just a few more days and they can move in already

A Mexican-style patio is part of the design at the rear of the house.

A huge estate like this one will require a large staff, and here is where some of them will live. The security forces will also be housed on the grounds as well. employee's compund

From the looks of this table, they plan on having huge parties in the future The furniture for the mansion is slowly being delivered. The Mexican influence is highly evident in this particular table design.

Not surprisingly, security cameras and lighting are everywhere throughout the estate. Here you can see how cleverly they are disguised as part of the landscaping. Just when you thought you had privacy...

Lush greens all around

The lovely garden area has been planted with tropical greenery, and pots of bouganvilla line the walkways and tumble from the planters.

In the water off the Mottola's pier, dolphins swim and play. They are probably waiting for Thalia to come out and play! their own dolphin park?

Seems like Thalia and Tommy intend to race each other on the waterways How many $200,000 speedboats does a family need? Already there is a shiny new Cigarette racing boat being stored at the new dock. There is no sign of the black model with "Thalita" painted on it which was Thalia's birthday gift two years ago. Have they traded it in on a faster boat, or do they now have "His" and "Hers" vehicles?

As a land vehicle while in Miami, Thalia has her beautiful Lexus convertible, which will have its home in the new 8-car garage at the estate. In this picture, she is visiting the house which she originally bought in Miami, which she has now given to her mother. Can you wash the car while I visit my mom?

Premios Lo Nuestro 2002 fails to deliver

A TW overview/editorial
Paulina Rubio Photo by: Claudia Susana Flores

Two for two, Paulina takes Best Pop Singer at Lo Nuestro 2002 Almost as much as everyone was wondering what happened to Thalía on Awards Night, the public is trying to figure out how the Premios Lo Nuestro managed to be so embarrassingly boring, unglamorous, incompetent, and just plain hard to understand how some of the awards could have even happened.

We hate having to write a report like this, but we are definitely not alone in our impressions. As negative as you might think this review is, there are dozens much worse that you can read if you know Spanish. Online newspapers such as El Norte are blasting the production as lame, the forums of Univision were swarming with criticism before the program even finished broadcasting at 11:30 pm, the tabloids were hard pressed to find anything to admire so instead they tried to write stories around some of the winners.

Theories abound about why, without prior notice to the media, Thalía decided not to attend. The “official story” is that she was busy with recording her upcoming album. Very few are accepting that since Thalía jets in and out of Miami constantly. And Univision was advertising her appearance on all their trailers, even with a special trailer about her career and nominations, so it appears that they were blindsided too. She was presented with her awards “in a special ceremony prior to the event”, they said. Where did this take place? In Miami or New York? Sad to say, we will probably have to wait until some tabloid digs up “the true story”.

There was no comparison with the brilliant Lo Nuestro of last year. This time the show started bad and quickly got worse. It simply never came together. The “Red Carpet” was a disaster, with the hosts completely out of touch with each other, fishing for commentary to fill the dead air while the few stars who attended wandered through. The sound cut off several times and the color was very bad, as if the cameras were not set on the right exposure for the light. Attendees were seated in folding metal chairs as if they were at a church social instead of a gala event; they looked very uncomfortable and awkward in these 3rd class accommodations.

As a fashion show it was really frightful. Thalía’s cool elegance was greatly missed. Both Mitzy and Sixto Nolasco (who often does Thalía’s makeup) were superfluous because so many of the outfits were totally unmemorable, with the exception of Odalys Garcia who must have thought she was to be posing for a calendar and left her clothes at home. Olga Tañon looked like she was wearing the patchwork overcoat that Thalía threw away after the Billboard Awards. Sofia Vergara got the best-dressed vote, keeping it simple with a long, white, strapless gown which highlighted what Sofia is famous for. The general consensus is that Anahi was wearing the most interesting and exotic outfit, but she was so high that she kept babbling and dashing around and spoiled the whole effect. Paulina Rubio proved once again that no matter who designs her clothes they do not fit her, but at least she did not fall out of her dress this year.

The ceremony was opened with a performance by Paulina Rubio, doing “Y Sigo Aquí” with a large male chorus behind her. Paulina can’t dance. ‘Nuff said.

If you’re a big fan of Banda music you probably hated the show a little bit less than the rest of us. It seemed like the whole night was mostly big groups of men in shiny western suits getting on and off the stage. We really wanted to see Thalía do her AALM Banda, probably everybody wonders if that had been her original plan. As for who got the awards and who performed what? Read about it at Univision.com if you want the complete lowdown. But here is how we know that something went wrong so that Thalía did not attend the ceremony: They completely skipped over the nominations in the two categories where she won! It was as if the categories did not even exist, they seemed unwilling to discuss it. Did it get cut out of the show at the last minute, leaving an awkward situation which they preferred not to deal with? A lot was made of Shakira accepting her award by remote broadcast from New York for the pop category of the Premio del Pueblo, so why couldn’t Thalía do that too if she was too busy to get away?

There is also a big controversy because Juan Gabriel won the “Best Pop Album” and “Pop Song of the Year” for “Abrazame Muy Fuerte,” which is clearly not even a pop song. In fact, a local DJ in my city commented that he dared anyone to name one other song on that album because they were never played on the air, never. But since Juan Gabriel was also receiving one of those career achievement awards like they used to give Thalía all the time, he made out like a bandit this time around. I will say that his performance which closed the show was the highlight of the evening, very well done.

What will happen to the Premios Lo Nuestro after this year is open for speculation, because they definitely can’t keep broadcasting flops like this last show. The nomination and voting process is so unfair and so slanted toward factors out of view of the rest of us that the public is not going to tolerate this kind of arrangement much longer. Many feel that Univision controls the entire process to showcase their contract stars, others think it smacks of payola and deal-making. Thalía was not the only one who did not attend; very few illustrious attendees of the past were there, such as Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Celia Cruz, Cristina, Chayanne, and Ricky Martin. We predict that the television audience will not be there either, in 2003, if some serious changes are not made.

Thalia won the Lo Nuestro Award for best Female Regional Mexican Artist and she also won the popular award, voted by fans over the internet, for Best Mexican Artist. She could not be present at the ceremony because she is currently recording her new pop album.
