Spectacular and sensual, Thalia takes her self-titled cd to Spain containing 10 tracks in Spanish and 3 in English

Thalía Spectacular in Spain

Like a whirlwind of sensuality that sweeps away whatever her gaze touches, Thalía has crossed the Atlantic and has arrived in Spain prepared to demonstrate that she is not just a multi-faceted artist - you have to remember that she has starred in some of the most successful telenovelas in Mexico - but also she is a chameleon, an artist who knows how to reinvent herself with each work, conscious of her defects and her virtues, authentic and direct, clear and transparent.

The singer arrived in Spain yesterday to present her new record, the ninth of her career, which carries her name. “This album is the return to my origins. I have made everything, from ballads, mambo or boleros, even rap. I stopped a moment and asked myself: Thali, what do you want to do now? And my soul said that I should return to my more alternative side. For this reason it is named the same as I.“The only objective of this record has been to create, in many cases songs which find inspiration in the retro music of the '60s, '70s and '80s, and bring them up to date."

That is how Thalía has explained, before the communications media congregated in a press conference, the new musical styles which infuse her album, for which she has counted on the inestimable collaboration of her friend Emilio Estefan, whom she has referred to as "my big brother". But she has also surrounded herself with the new sounds of producers like Estefano or Corey Rooney, who has worked with Jennifer Lopez, Destiny's Child, and Michael Jackson. The work has been easy, she stated, “because I had the luck of being wrapped up by extremely talented producers.” Thalia considers ¿A quién le importa? the hymn of youth

One of the surprises hidden in this record is precisely the song The Mexican, featuring the collaboration of Marc Anthony. “It was a great surprise that he left for me," she said breathlessly. "Corey Rooney is the producer for us both. One day, being in the studio, Corey showed Marc Anthony the song. He liked it and immediately told him to open the microphone because he wanted to participate.”

Thalia has commented that Spain enchants her, specially the food. Another is the version of the famous song by Alaska and Dinarama "A quién le importa?" which became so popular in the "movida" years. Thalía commented that precisely this morning she had gotten up to the sad news of Carlos Berlanga's death. (Note: Berlanga was the writer of this song.) “The version which is in my record has turned into a tribute to him. He was a person who introduced a much freer and real perspective in music and the song became a hymn for youth. Also I want it to become a hymn for those who triumph."

Renewed music styles and a youthful aspect, the sweet face of a child and the statuesque and provocative body of a woman, Thalía displayed her beauty sheathed in jeans and a sensual pink camisol. Almond eyes, tanned skin, and an endless mane of hair, the Mexican diva knows how to take advantage of her statuesque physique and so she has left it obvious. Star by day and a simple person when they turn off the spotlights and microphone, a wink from her explodes to infinity, lighting up all present there where she passes.

“I'm a mutant, I love to reinvent myself, I am chameleon-like and I like to play with the fashion trends, always respecting what is in my soul. There are days when I get up like a normal girl," she declares with that conquering Mexican accent, "and it appeals to me to just put on some pants and a cap to go out in the street, and others I dress like a diva. Life is like that, sensations." She is giving time to her husband and her family right now. Children can come later.

Thalía’, now occupying first place on the hit list after coming onto the Spanish market only June 3rd (the first single, ‘Tú y yo’, can be heard strongly on all the radio station), contains 10 songs in Spanish and 3 in English. Nevertheless, the singer is not planning to stop recording in her native tongue. “I have had the great fortune to be one of the few Latin artists who has been number one in countries such as France, Greece, Germany or Indonesia, singing in Spanish. I am a defender of my language, but I believe that three extra songs in English is an option. I am never going to stop singing in Spanish because base of my public is latino."

I enjoy reinventing myself. The beautiful Mexican stated that "Music is life itself. A day without music is like a day without water. It involves all the senses.” Nevertheless, she spent many years dedicating herself to the artistic world and has learned that it is very painful to realize one day all one has left behind due to being centered on work. For that reason, now she wants to enjoy the excellent moment which she is passing through, as much in the professional plane as the personal. “It already happened to me in the past, and it is painful to realize all that you gave up everything for work. That's why you have to search for equilibrium and also be with your friends and family."
Married since December of 2000 to Sony president Tommy Mottola, Thalía lives in one continuous honeymoon, although for now children will have to wait. “As a human being, to be a mother is a sensational life project. But now I am giving time for us, for my family. In this moment I can't stay tied down." My public base is Latin.

Not satisfied with provoking an uproar among her fans in Mexico and the United States, Thalía will cross the Atlantic this weekend to make a quick tour through Europe so that her admirers may be introduced to her new record.

This new record, which went on sale last May 21, includes 14 songs, among them versions in Spanish and English of the song "The Mexican 2002", in which she does a duet with the famous Puerto Rican singer Marc Anthony. The CDs which are being sold include a cumbia remix of "Tú y Yo", in which Thalía is accompanied by A.B. Quintanilla and The Kumbia Kings.

The singer likes to meditate, jog, and read in Central Park, besides walking through the streets of New York, the city in which she lives with her husband, the impresario of the music industry, Tommy Mottola.

"In Central Park I like to stretch out on the grass, read, do my meditations and jog, and walk through the city", stated the also actress on the program El Gordo y la Flaca. Mexico City: Nearly two thousand people caused a stir in Mixup, a record store in Plaza Universidad where Thalía was appearing to promote her new record, accompanied by the directors of the record store, her record label EMI Music, and her Westwood Management.

Approximately 80 security guards, plus 20 people from the record company and three from Westwood Management, without counting admirers, were present at the appointment which the singer had with her followers to mark her initials on the cover of their records.

Were you here? Stand up and be counted!

Only 500 people were fortunate enough to be allowed to approach the singer and actress, who arrived accompanied by her mother, Yolanda Sodi, the first determined fans having started to line up as early as 5:00 am. Although many might think that the fans would be singing Thalía's first single, "Tú y Yo", it was not the case, since the majority of the people kept repeating at the top of their lungs "A quién le importa", the star's new version of the classic theme by Alaska.

At the time that the wife of Tommy Mottola wanted to go outside and greet the curious who were not able to acquire her signature, they all leaped on top of the security personnel, which caused her to return to the store running in order protect herself.

The Mexican singer Thalía arrived in Mexico City on Sunday night, with a full schedule ahead of her to promote her new album entitled Thalía.

Thalía found herself in the middle of a tumult provoked because 40 admirers began to chant her name as soon as they saw her enter the airport from a flight originating in New York City. (Note: Those fans may have been the first to spot her but the crowd instantly swelled to such numbers that even her official fan club couldn't get anywhere near her. Survivors of this mob said they had never seen such a huge number of fans greeting Thalia at the Mexico City International Airport.)

Without further comments other than to express her satisfaction at having been received so enthusiastically by her fans, Thalía walked toward the airport exit surrounded by a six-person security team who protected her from being bothered by the fans and was transferred to a van.

"I'm very excited about being in Mexico City again, I always love it that they receive me in this way," said the singer.

Thalía will speak with some of the media from the press, radio, and TV and will participate in the program Otro Rollo at Televisa on Tuesday.

Mexican actress/singer Thalía is living her own telenovela these days. Her career is soaring and so is her personal life. Happily married to Tommy Mottola, chairman of Sony Music Entertainment, she’s living proof that dreams do come true. “I’ve been married now for more than a year. We’re extremely happy, very much in love. It’s as though we were still dating. Blissful! We’re still finding out things about each other, discovering one another. It’s beautiful, it’s wonderful. We’re still on our honeymoon.”

Her new album, “Thalía”
Today, Thalía is at the top of her game, yet her road to fame has not been easy or fast. At 30, she’s a seasoned all-around entertainer with a 20-year career behind her. Her old telenovelas are still being watched worldwide, her albums have gone gold and platinum over and over again, and she’s also done theater and movies. Now she’s about to launch a new CD titled, simply, “Thalía.” “It’s awesome, it’s incredible,” she says with enthusiasm. “I have great backing with the lyrics and the music. It’s great. Everybody who listens to it loves it. It has a little bit of everything; it’s rhythmic, it’s romantic, las letras son padres. It’s me.”

Being married to a music mogul, one might think he’s whispering things in her ear. Is he exerting any type of influence on her work? “Not at all,” she’s quick to respond. “He respects me a great deal and stays away from my work. He lets me do what I feel I have to do in my profession, and loves everything I do, mainly because I’m sincere about it.” According to this young star, she takes a very active role in the production of her records. “I like to be a part of it, especially because it bears my name, my image. I know where I want to go,” she adds.

Home Life

Thalía lives in a beautiful Miami Beach home, surrounded by the lush setting provided by a private island facing Biscayne Bay. The Mottolas also have a plush apartment in New York City, where they spend half the time. Though life is very glamorous these days, this young star still feels a touch of nostalgia when she talks about Mexico. “México es lo máximo, se me salen los suspiros,” she says. “The people, the music, the atmosphere, the food... Mexico is unique. I guess everybody talks this way about one’s homeland. But let me tell you, I miss the old places, los rinconcitos.” On the other hand, she also thinks living in the United States is a great experience. “Living here has great advantages. I go out riding a bike, and no one bothers me. You don’t fear being abducted.”

Any successful person in the entertainment business is vulnerable to rumors, gossip. It’s not hard to understand that one thing Thalía is adamant about is maintaining her privacy. “It’s an everyday battle I have to fight. There’s always someone who’s willing to go out and sell amarillismo, that uses you to sell more issues of a magazine or get more ratings for their show. The very sad thing about it is that some artists, stars, do tell tales, and that is detrimental to everybody. They open the doors to their houses and allow people they hardly know to come and share with them their problems, their divorces. That spoils it for everybody to some extent. As far as I’m concerned, I’ll defend my privacy tooth and nail,” she said.

What more can she ask for?

On being a New Yorker
As far as living in New York City, “Wow! that’s the capital of the world! It provides you with the opportunity to grow. You have access to the best music teachers, the best drama coaches, the best of the best. I love it!”

Being part of the Big Apple, the memories of Sept. 11 still linger. “I think the whole world changed. Everybody was spiritually shaken. That’s why I think we’re living our lives differently now, not wasting our time with banalities, but we’ve gone back to basics: Enjoy being with your mate, with your family; walking down the beach; watching a sunset. God works in mysterious ways, so they say. I think this was a warning to everybody.”

Her very special person
Thalía may be away from her homeland, but her family remains close. She’s the youngest of five sisters and her mother lives fairly close by. How important is she? “There’s nothing like one’s mother. Her backing, her love, her support, unconditional love. No matter what you do, whether you’re good or bad; if things go well, or not so well, she’s always going to be on your side, and that’s what I feel for her. I adore my mother. I can’t imagine what my life would be without her. Besides, she’s been my mother and my manager; my father and my friend. (Thalía’s father died when she was only 5 years old.) She set the basis for our relationship. We’re so close. When we’re not near, we talk at least seven times a day on the phone. She’s my hero, and I would do everything and anything for her, to make her happy. Everything that I can, I will do. Forever.”

Thalia at her prettiest Feeling so strongly about her family makes one wonder what her own role as a mother would be. Is she thinking of having children? “Yes, but not right now. In the future. Now, my albums are my kids,” she says.

What lies ahead
Looking back at Thalia’s beginnings as a 9-year-old member of the Grupo Din-Din—when she dreamed of becoming a star—and later, when she joined Timbiriche, it’s been amazing to see her change, grow up, becoming María Mercedes, Marimar, María la del Barrio, Rosalinda... How does she see the process? “You suffer blows that make you grow, and then you lose your innocence. The beautiful thing about being innocent is that it allows you to make mistakes. Then it hurts, and it means that you’ve learned your lesson and you won’t make the same mistake again. I had my share, of mistakes. I mean, it’s human isn’t it? But it’s been wonderful to learn, to grow up and be able to build my life... Now I’m living a wonderful moment and I know that many people would kill to be in my place. But these are my circumstances, my turn to be happy, and I’m enjoying every minute of it. Yes, I’m aware that’s not what I’m taking with me some day. All I’m taking is my soul, and if my spirit is dry, or full of hate or envy, that’s what I’ll be bringing to God. Every day, I think of growing spiritually, and to give the best that’s in me to those around me.”

With such a prolific career, one wonders where she wants to go from here. “Right now, I’m totally dedicated to music. When I do a telenovela I make a very big commitment, I have to give it 100 percent, but I don’t feel like doing that right now. I want to enjoy my music and the novelas will have to wait a while.”

What about crossing over? How’s her English? “My English is doing so well. But you see, I have a live-in professor, who does it for free, 24 hours a day, right in my own home. Look, I’m so happy to have been able to include three English songs in this CD. Back in ’96 I had a record in English that turned platinum, so I’ve been there. Now, what I’m trying to do with this album is to have these three cuts as an introduction to my future in the American market. I’m very excited about it.”

There may be signs that the Latin boom, at its peak maybe a year ago, may have suffered after Sept. 11, with the present rush of patriotism. “I think,” Thalía says, “that the Latin boom is neither gone, nor has it really started. It does not have a beginning or an end. I think we’re here. Our culture is very rich and its main ingredient is its happiness. We bring happiness to the world. We’re the light that shines upon this planet, that’s how I see the Latin culture. Diverse, very rich, always with a smile pinned on its face. That’s what we have to give, and that’s how we’re perceived. The world needs el sabor y picante latino.”

More to come
“There’s always something new we want to do. The day we stop wanting to do new things, to stop have ambitions, that’s the day when we stop being alive,” she explains. “We have a mission in life, which is to conquer new things. And of course, we all strive for happiness and the well-being of our people, our family. As far as I’m concerned, I want to do what makes me happy, not nervous or uneasy.

“Last year was my 20-year career anniversary. Working, working, working... Now, I’m writing my memories, my experiences. Who knows, I may turn them into a book. On the other hand, I’m going to continue with my projects, like my eyeglass collection; that’s doing incredibly well. Then I would like to diversify, to produce, to do other things. It’s good to experiment, to look for new and exciting things. That’s what I’m planning to do.”

The secret of her success? “People talk about luck. It’s more than that. I say, stay focused, work. Lucky breaks do come and go. You have to know how to take advantage of the opportunities that life provides. Also, you have to pay the price. I worked very hard all my life. I’ve traveled, sacrificed myself, neglected friends, love. Not anymore. Now I’m enjoying my life, living to the max. I’m cashing in."

Thalia is a Hit in the Hola New York Concert at Madison Square Garden

Thalia’s performance on April 20th in the Hola New York Concert at Madison Square Garden was a hit! The public responded wonderfully to the new single Tu y Yo and sang along to the song’s infectious chorus, while Thalia and her musicians lit the auditorium with pure energy.

The night’s surprise was the cover of A Quien le Importa which replies directly to the malicious criticism that the artist endures constantly. The song was received very well. En la Fiesta Mando Yo, was the third debut of the night and was also praised with thunderous applause. Thalia was the only woman that performed and she was surrounded by famous leading men such as Alexander Pires, Ricardo Montaner, Pablo Montero, and La Mosca, among others. Congratulations Thalia!

“This is the first time I present my record in New York City and it was I that was surprised because the audience new the song already and it had only been on the radio for 5 days. It is a record that I made with a lot of passion and I’m receiving the same love from the public. I would like to thank especially the members of my official Fan Club Mundo de Cristal who were there, present, as always. I love you!” said Thalia.
A quien la importa. Thier criticisms don't matter to her.
