Jennifer Lopez and Kylie Minogue had better watch out because the Latin divas have now arrived in the European market, says the German periodical Bild in its online edition.

Paulina Rubio, Thalía, and Patricia Manterola are the three Mexicans who, according to the publication, could be able to unseat those international pop stars. Also appearing in the list as promises of the season are the Colombian Shakira, the German Paule, and the Australian Holly Valance.

"Especially dangerous are the sexy examples from Latin America, the continent with the most fiery women and the most passionate music. We imagine that they will give (Jennifer and Kylie) the most hard-fought competition", says the publication.

It appears that Thalía will also arrive at the countries of Europe "arrasando" with her music and her style. The Mexican, who recently declared to the Swiss periodical Blik that she does not need the aid of her husband, Tommy Mottola, is described by the publication as "the new Latin star."

German cybernauts can already download the video and listen to the song "Tú y Yo", which surely will be heard all summer long on the German radio and television, and in the discos.

The address of the publication is http://www.bild.t-online.de and the article can be found in the "Musik" section. (Note: As you might expect, it is in German. There is also information about the other Latin singers, but we omitted that part for the purpose of this report.)

Is the real racist Michael?

Tommy Mottola neither worries nor is he distressed by the accusations of racism and bad faith which Michael Jackson has charged him with in the last weeks, since besides the fact that he is not one, he has received shows of support from figures such as Puff Daddy, Céline Dion, and even Mariah Carey, assured Thalía.

"He is happy because he knows what he has sown and what he is harvesting", explained the wife of the president of Sony Music. "He is not going to file any lawsuit, and besides, he can count on the support of all his friends and many artists who have sent letters and have spoken to him by telephone."

The Mexican actress and singer, who married Mottola more than a year ago in New York, discounted the rumors that the ex-wife of the impresario, who was under contract to Sony Music until 2001, might have complained about a supposed campaign against her on the part of the record executive. It was in the last few days that Jackson declared that Mariah had commented to him that Mottola was a devil and that he wanted to destroy her career since she had quit being a part of Sony Music.

"Mariah sent Tommy a message saying that she supports him. Through her publicist she commented that (Jackson) was speaking for her and asked that they not involve her in that problem. It is all false, he has utilized her name."

In the last two weeks, Jackson called Mottola a racist and someone who acts in bad faith because he did not give due promotion to his record Invincible, which was considered a sales failure since it only reached 5 million units sold when they expected it to sell at least 13 million.

"How can he talk about racism when he spent so much money to change his natural skin color, and now he wants to it to go back to being that again? What can he allege about racism when he has a mansion with an amusement park inside his house... when he gives away millions of dollars in jewels to Elizabeth Taylor?" questioned Thalía.

Because of that, she said, before participating in this controversy provoked by Jackson, people ought to think who is whiter than whom.

"My husband was the precursor of the "boom latino" in the United States, he propelled Gloria Estefan and Julio Iglesias, so nobody can accuse him of racism, of bad faith".

She added that artists have many insecurities, and when they experience a failure they look for someone else to blame.

"The record industry is no longer the same as 20 years ago. Now the MP3 and record piracy have diminished sales of records, including those which were great sellers, like Mariah Carey, Céline Dion, and this gentleman (Jackson)".

Mitzy launching a collection of miniature dresses

All these years fans have been begging for there to be a Thalía doll, and at last their prayers will be answered. There is one little problem though - this doll will be faceless!

For the past 28 years, Mitzy, one of the most famous designers in the Mexican entertainment industry, has dressed dozens of artists. Verónica Castro, Thalía, Francis, and María Félix are his best calling cards. In exclusive for EL UNIVERSAL, he talks about how now he will dress miniatures

It deals with one of the great projects that he has planned for this year. The first is the launching of a Barbie-type doll, which will include a famous dress designed by him.

"The dolls will be the same, and the people will buy the one they like best. That is to say, there will be the doll with Thalía's wedding dress, one which has the long black blouse of María Félix; the spectacular outfits of Francis (the famous female impersonator), as well as all those dresses that Verónica Castro wore in Mala noche no and La movida.”

Soon, each fan will own a mini version of this wedding gown

The idea arose in the United States, where they will begin to sell these dolls which all will have the same face. "It would be impossible and extremely expensive to have the faces made of all the famous women that I have dressed."

The designer, who is a native of Michoacán, one day came to the conclusion that "the public has its idols, and in many occasions they buy everything referring to the famous one. In this occasion if someone admires Thalía, well, they will have the opportunity of having her wedding dress in miniature. Or if other people loved La Doña (María Félix), they will keep a replica of the long blouse that I designed for her which drew many complements from the press", commented Mitzy.

This is a project that will cost millions to start up, explained the designer, "because the dresses in miniature will be of high quality and will be supervised by me. Each detail has to be perfectly appointed, there cannot be defects."

"If Thalía's wedding dress has special stitching, the one that the doll has must be a replica. If the one of Francis carries some feathers, these have to be sent out to be fabricated in miniature," he explained.

Concerning the permission for using the name of the famous people, he explained: "Obviously this requires a lot of paperwork, for whatever legal reasons, but as much Thalía as Francis and all the others that I have dressed support me, there is no problem."

Other figures that were dressed by Mitzy and whose wardrobe will be sold in miniature are Niurka, Daniela Romo, María Victoria, Angélica María, Christian Bach, Sasha Montenegro, Victoria Ruffo, among many others.

"I am like a baker, the buns keep coming out constantly. Besides, I have the ability for designing dresses of all types, very simple and very glamorous."

In addition to having a large clientele in his Mexico City boutique, the designer to the stars soon will open a new branch in Miami and then another will follow in New York.

"I love this idea, since it deals with promoting things 'made in México'. And it is that our designs are realized totally here and we want to demonstrate that our fashions are at the high level of whatever place in the world. Right now we are registering the name internationally."

At the moment, Mitzy is keeping himself busy making up what will be the new wardrobe of Rocío Dúrcal, who is at the point of releasing her new record.

Thalía visited Puerto Rico to promote her new record and along the way she spoke up concerning the declarations which Michael Jackson made which claimed that her husband, Tommy Mottola, president of Sony Music, is a racist. The Mexican singer stated that she knows the person she shares her life with very well. "Tommy is a man who has been a pioneer in music, a personality known in the entire world."

Meanwhile, in New York, Michael Jackson continues to cause controversy and reiterated that black musicians are exploited by the music industry.

"Since I began to break sales records, from day to night they called me a monster, they called me a homosexual and child abuser. They said that I whitened my skin and they did everything to put the public against me," said The King of Pop.

The artist accused his record label Sony of not promoting his album Invincible, which has not sold well and has been highly criticized around the world.

Thalia's agenda in this country, in which she will remain for three days, is understood as: This Monday a press conference that will take the opportunity to promote the line of glasses which carries her name, which is already found in local stores; For Tuesday, the singer will grant interviews to the communications media and participate in television programs such as "No te duermas", "Anda pa'l cará", "Otra cosa" and "Dame un break", as well as on radio programs.

According to versions from the newspaper reporters, Thalia will not be accompanied on this occasion by either her mother, Yolanda, who has managed her career, nor her husband, Tommy Mottola. She is only accompanied by two of her assistants and the representatives of her record label in this Caribbean nation.

Mexican singer Thalía was received yesterday on the Island with a Platinum Record for the sales of her self-titled record, which has already surpassed 200,000 units. The also actress accepted the recognition during the press conference with which she initiated the promotion of her new record for EMI Latin in this country.

Immediately afterwards, the artist was located in an area surrounded with candles and white flowers, a routine which, according to what she expressed, helps her to maintain her mind clean, clear, and well focused.

Another in a long list of succesful albums

The Mexican diva responded immediately to everything, including to the comparisons which intended to put her opposing Paulina Rubio or at the side of Shakira, with the same sweetness with which she recited her speeches in those rosy novelas which she starred in. Thus, for example, upon the comment that "La Chica Dorada" had gone ahead of her in the crossover, she responded: "Since 1996, my career has been international and I achieved it singing in Spanish in markets such as Germany and France, so everyone has his own point of view." On the other hand, with respect to Shakira, she said that it would be a good option to record a number together since they are friends.

Thalía spoke about the "duality" of her personality upon referring to the posters that announced her record and which read "Bitch n' Bad". Why not?. "Some days I get up romantic and can be the little princess of the novelas, and others I am more aggressive and I want to devour the world."

"Some days I get up romantic and can be the little princess of the novelas, and others I am more aggressive and I want to devour the world."
"I know the person with whom I share my life. He is a man who has been a pioneer in music, a personality in the whole world, and the facts speak for themselves alone. Racist, and he is with a Mexican? Ha, ha," (NOTE: Anybody who thinks the term "bitchin' bad" is anything more than a harmless complement obviously has not lived anywhere near California for the last 30 years since the term has been in use. It is NOT profanity. However, some of the remarks in the dedication of her record ARE vulgar and very unnecessary; it seems like Thalia is trying to act "cool" by imitating the language of black musicians, and we personally think she should confine that to the recording studio.)

That "aggressiveness" came up again when it came her turn to defend her husband, Tommy Mottola, President of Sony, when the declarations in which Michael Jackson marked him as a racist were mentioned.

"I know the person with whom I share my life. He is a man who has been a pioneer in music, a personality in the whole world, and the facts speak for themselves alone. Racist, and he is with a Mexican? Ha, ha," she responded.

Besides that, the interpreter revealed that she is still living a honeymoon with her husband more than a year into her marriage. She also said that she will not have children yet, but in the future she would adopt a Mexican boy and a Chinese girl.

Also, upon referring to the fact that her mother, Yolanda, does not carry her career, she said that: "She is still right on the front lines, but without speaking even a drop of English she carried my career up to where I am. My mother is a brilliant woman."

As far as the possibility of returning to the telenovelas, she affirmed that she was not disposed to lose her freedom by being in a television studio for 12 hours of weeping every day. Nevertheless, she would like to produce a television series in which she would act.

About the movies, she indicated that she is presently studying scripts for a Mexican picture and that if she had to chose a leading man it would the "el potrillo", Vicente Fernández. (Note: Oh NO! Just what she needs - something where she STILL doesn't have to speak English, which nobody is going to watch outside of Mexico, and which will accomplish absolutely nothing for her career.)

Thalía admitted being a "mutant" in her styles and a strange person in that she does not fear old age, because "the spirit is eternal."

She also took the opportunity to advance the information that she is planning a tour of concerts for the beginning of the coming year and that it will include some appearances in Puerto Rico.

For now, she will promote only the record THALÍA

Miami. The Mexican singer Thalía today assured the media that she already has ready her first record in English, although she is still promoting her most recent material in Spanish, which was launched a month and a half ago in Mexico, the United States, Spain, and other countries.

Thalía indicated to Notimex that the album in English "is already done, it is ready now", although she clarified that "my priority is my language, I am not an ungrateful person, on the contrary." Because of this, the record will also contain songs in Spanish. (Note: If this statement is correct, it is the first time Thalía has admitted her "English" album will NOT be all in English, a strange thought after we have been told for a year that she would cross over completely to English.)

"I don't know when it will come out (on the market), it will depend on how this record Thalía keeps on working right now, with which we have so far had an incredible and impacting response," explained the singer, who declined to give more details about the project.

The Mexican artist is presently spending a few days in her house at this city in south Florida and she took advantage of her stay to continue the promotion of her material which was placed on sale last May 21st. Besides granting interviews to the Latin American communications media and local television stations, the singer participated in a chat on the Terra website the night before last.

Produced by various musicians such as Estefano, Emilio Estefan, and Cory Rooney, Thalía includes 14 songs like "Tú y yo" -the first single - "Así es el destino", "Closer to you" and "The Mexican 2002", with a version in English and Spanish with Marc Anthony.

Thalía stated that her album is presently in the top positions of popularity in Spain and several Latin American countries. In the United States, she specified, "it is in first place for sales for five weeks, according to Billboard Magazine, which has a super credibility. So I am amazed, I never imagined this response."

She informed that she has already promoted the material in Mexico, the United States, Spain, and France, countries to which she has planned to briefly return, while besides those she will visit other nations of Europe, Asia, and the greater part of Latin America.

The artist who became famous with telenovelas like "Quinceañera", "Marimar", "María Mercedes", and "María la del Barrio", said that her international success does not mean that Mexico is going to lose her.

"Why lose? On the contrary, it is happiness, I believe that it is a pride that someone from your same race, from your same country, with the same opportunities that you had, is carrying your flag all over. I believe that, on the contrary, she is more yours than before, no?", she concluded.

Let the cameras roll! What do you think of the situation in Argentina?

"It pains me greatly. I knew a prosperous country. All the Latin American countries have certain conflicts. The only think left for us to do as nations is to make an effort to change and not to be waiting for the governments to decide it."

At what age would you like to retire?

"I would not like to make a fool of myself and cause other people embarrassment by doing things that are not appropriate for me. At some time in the future I would love to support new talents and continue with my music in a different manner."

What religion do you practice?

"I believe God is over all things. I do not have a religion like going to the church and making confession. The important thing for me is the daily chat that I have with God."

Are you afraid of a separation?

"I believe that when you have so strong a commitment with somebody the last thing you are thinking of is that."

How would you like to be remembered?

"As a woman who was happy, positive, devoted, strong, as a lovely person."

How did you become a singer?

I began when I was 9 years old. I wanted to be a famous child. I got into a group through my sister Laura. That is how I began."

What is fame for you?

“Fame is an illusion. There are days in which it is more aggressive than others. There are days in which I would like to be more anonymous."

Who would you do a duet with?

"At this time I don't know. I am not planning a duet. In my record I have the participation of Los Rabanes. Suddenly Marc Anthony also participated."

What do you do to be so slender?

"I drink a lot of water, and I don't eat so many sweets. I don't know how I do it."

What does the yellow pendant signify that you wore when you were beginning?

"It is a talisman for me. I am carrying them again."

When will you return to television?

"I don't have plans now to do telenovelas. I have plans in the future to produce or co-produce some miniseries."

How do you feel about having triumphed in Brazil with your music and telenovelas?

"To have arrived and to have had the opportunity to enter the Brazilian market and to have had the response from the public I am sincerely grateful because they opened the doors."

Have you tried drugs?

"I have never done it. Right now I believe that the young people are more focused on drugs. My principles always said I didn't need it. I never got hooked on that."

How do you feel facing a bad criticism?

"It all depends on who it comes from. If it comes from a good reporter who has experience, who has knowledge, it is valid and it is constructive criticism. When it comes from the yellow press I don't even bother to turn the pages."

What is your opinion of Madonna?

"She is like a chameleon. I'm fascinated by her because of always so much evolution. She portrays society at each moment and that is what fascinates me about her."

This is the closest all the fans will get for an up close and personal talk with Thalia

What do you have left when you accomplish a dream?

"I believe that everything that one desires with his heart, he can touch it and it can give fruit."

When is the debut of the video “No me enseñaste”?

"Ah!, I adore that video. It is going to debut very soon, when the public decides it."

Do you miss Mexico?

"Very much, very much. I have the heart of a Mariachi, of a Mexican female."

What do you think of Brazilian music?

"I LOVE YOU, BRAZIL! The truth is that Brazil left a mark in my soul. I love the Brazilian music. The day that I die I want pure bossanova to accompany me."

What do you say when someone talks about "your surgeries"?

"I'm fascinated to hear all the myths that there are surrounding my person. Only about 20% of them are true, but they fascinate me. One evolves and changes, and even the ugliest woman looks good with a good makeup artist."

Did you ever think about dedicating yourself to something else?

"I still have many goals to achieve. I want to be a psychologist, I'm fascinated by the development of the mind."

What is your opinion of Mariah Carey?

“She’s a sensational girl and I hope that things go much better for her than what has gone with her up until now.”

What does Thalía do when she has recently gotten up?

“I brush my teeth. I throw cold water on myself and turn on the music.“

Are you happy with the public’s reception?

“I am in ecstasy with all the reception of this music. I made this record from the center of my heart.”

“I believe that the internationalization has already grown. Only one territory is missing for me to place my little flag, but I am not losing sleep over it.”

Which is the most important person in your life?

“There are many - my mamá, my husband, my sisters...”

¿How is married life?

“I don’t like to talk about my private life because it is the only thing of mine which is still private. But I can tell you that I am very happy.“

What is love for you?

“It is the motor that drives the day. From day to day. When you are in love with a person, with music, with an animal, all is positive in your life.”

What do you do to have that figure?

“I do yoga, I don’t like sweet things much, I like fried things more, salads, and I believe that not to mix helps."

“The CD is already done. It has songs by Steve Morales. It’s already done, I am waiting for this record to continue to grow” (i.e., that the Thalía CD peaks)

What is your greatest fear?

“I’m not afraid of anything. I believe that we are all here to learn, in this grand school that is life.”

Which is your best song?

“From this record there is one named ‘No me enseñaste,’ I love them all, it is that there are so many...”

Is it true that you are a friend of Pink?

“I love Pink!. I believe she is very sincere”

Greetings from Colombia!

“A big kiss to my beloved Colombia. I love you very much and I hope to carry my music to you and eat one of those agiacos that are so delicious.”

What music do you select for a romantic encounter?

“Bossanova, one hundred percent.”

What would you say to those who have just begun?

“I would tell them to listen to my song “A quien le importa”. There are many people who feel bad upon seeing the success of another. It’s flattering when someone draws attention to you, it means that you went out of the common.”

You once said that in this record there were many Thalías. Can you explain yourself?

“In this record I gave myself the opportunity to interpret the songs in different manners. In one is the sound of a more aggressive Thalía, in others more sexy, more playful.”

What do you most enjoy?

I enjoy eating, playing with my pets, reading, dancing, I adore life."

Do you feel you are more singer than actress?

“Whenever you are singing you are acting. If you are interpreting a song much more danceable you take on the character of Carmen Miranda. To sing permits you to act.

I would get bored repeating myself, I am always mutating. I would not like to return to other styles of the past.” (Note: This is how you end up with your foot in your mouth during long interviews. Read how Thalía responded to the last question in this interview.)

Why didn’t you make an album totally in English?

“This album has several songs in English. I have had the good luck to be in the popularity list in Spanish in countries like Indonesia and the Philippines.”

When are you coming to Guatemala?

“Let’s see when they invite me, I would love to be there for some festival.”

How do you feel about being in first place?

“I feel proud to have a fan base so solid, that loves me, that supports me. It’s something to be proud of.”

What is your last record about?

“The only objective for making this record was that of creating, of rescuing those ‘80s influences and to put it in the present.”

Would you compose a record to your fans?

“All of the records are for my fans.”

All these answers and yet she still remains a mystery to her fans

When do you begin your world tour?

“We are organizing it for the end of this year or the beginning of the next year.”

What do you do to be so beautiful?

“Physically I do yoga, I walk a lot, I dance a lot, and I drink a lot of water."

Aren’t you tired of them comparing you to Paulina Rubio?

“We are one great family. It doesn’t bother me."

Do you believe that this is your best production?

“I believe that it is a return. This is my production number nine, and it is a good number in order to return to my beginnings.”

Below are some scans of the European version of the much awaited Thalia cd. You will note that the cd jacket of this release differs from the US and Mexico release. Obviously Thalia spent a lot of time in the studio taking photos as these photos seem to be specifically geared towards the European Market. Though the fans love the cd, some were disappointed to learn that not only was the much hailed Tu y Yo Cumbia Remix (featuring A.B Quintanilla and the Kumbia Kings) not included in this particular release, but that there was no lyric sheet included as well.
