After days of scrutinizing the entries to the contest, we have finally managed to whittle down the entries to the top 3 best and brightest essays coming fron the most die-hard of Thalia fans in the community. Unfortunately, only 1 could win the grand prize. The Grand Prize No Me Enseñaste Limited Edition CD goes to...

René Ocampo Casarrubias of Mexico City, Mexico !

We also have two "Honorable Mention" awards which we decided to give, and they go to:

Mariam Farah of Haifa, Israel, and Elizabeth Flansburg Cruz of San Antonio, Puerto Rico

These two young ladies will get to choose between receiving the 2003 Thalia Calendar or the first issue of Thalia Magazine which appeared in Buen Hogar this month.

The primary thing we looked for in the judging was how well you expressed yourself. We had one truly excellent entry which was disqualified because it had 50 words over the limit, and the other people who entered deserve a reward too for the effort they made. Therefore, all the rest of you may have an issue of TV & Novelas which has Thalia on the cover. We thank everybody for all the wonderful things they had to say about Thalia and the difference she made in their lives. Everybody who did not give their mailing address with their entries, please send us another email with this information.

Here is the English translation for the non-Spanish speaking readers:

WHAT THALIA HAS TAUGHT ME

Being able to explain all the things that I have learned being with Thalia over the ten years in which I have been her fan is difficult, because Thalia is a human being from which one can absorb and learn a great deal .

Therefore, I am going to explain the most significant thing that I have learned from her. Since I first saw Thalia (1992) she always has had as a motto, and she repeats it often, that in life nothing is impossible, that everything that we may want, if we fight for our dreams these things may be made reality. Upon hearing her I said....That's not true, everything is not possible.

My dream is to meet Thalia and to have an autograph of hers and that is impossible. I remember very well that in the program "I Vero America Va", Verónica Castro asked Thalia if she had some dream, and Thalia told her yes: that that was the start of what she wanted to do since she wanted to be something really great, to triumph in many countries and to carry Mexico and her roots there in her name!

And the time passed and suddenly I saw Thalia triumphing in Spain, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brazil, Argentina, etc. They were calling her the Aztec Goddes, the Mexican, and I realized that Thalia had achieved her dream because she believed in herself, because she was certain that she was gong to achieve it and because she fought for her dream.

Then I decided to believe in myself, to believe that I was really going to meet Thalia, I convinced myself of that, and it really happened on Friday, April 28. I fulfilled my dream and I met Thalia and had an autograph. Upon returning to my house, my dream realized and with my autograph now in my hand, that day was the first day of sales for the record "Arrasando" and I opened the CD and the first thing that I read is the dedication that Thalia put on the CD, which says something more or less like this:

"In the road of life I have found that the beauty of a dream takes form if you have the capacity of visualization. If we control our mind and we think only about positive and creative things without doubting in our capacities, the world opens at your feet with the same positive energy that emanates from you."

And when I read it I said WOW!!!  She's right. And since that time everything that I have proposed to do I have achieved it thus, whether the most insignificant thing, I succeeded only because I believe in myself and because Thalia has taught me that when we desire something we have to believe in ourselves and fight for our dreams, and this is what I will continue doing. That is what Thaly has taught me.

Our Two Honorable Mentions also wrote heart tugging words about how Thalia has made an impact on their lives. Their entries are definitely worth reading.

If you had to pick just one,

Here is our entry from Israel as written by Mariam Farah:

" WHAT THALIA TAUGHT ME"

life is like school, which each day  we take a new lesson that we'll never forget , this school is full of teachers who teach us the meaning of the love, the meaning to give , to forgive, to understand each others , to dream , to be happy, to be.....to be ourselves...

each of us have a special teatcher who has been taught by her or him the most important and the most beautiful things, In my case my favorite teacher is thalia, yes thalia , that great singer and actress which I have admired since I was a child , then I liked her maybe because she is cute and beautiful but after that I discover that its not just beauty its something greater then that , I feel that thalia dose not sing because she has a good voice , no its not just that, thalia has something deeper then that , yes its  her heart , her heart which make her write each feeling , each sensation and after that to present it for her public , yes that's the most important thing that thalia teach me ,I shoudn't give any thing or say anything or do anything if its not from my heart, cause it wont be honest because god give us this heart to put it first of all and it will drive us to the aim..

in the best way in arrasando  way she taught me that the light is inside our heart this light which make me do what I want and there's no dark to turn off this light which I  have inside , she taught me that happiness exist but we have to find it as soon as we can cause we live just once , she taught me that we have to live and to enjoy of our days because its the most valuable things that we have , she taught me that to happy I havent to ask a permission from anyone :))she told me : yes life is a party and you have to make it yours you can dance in it, feel it and enjoy  it before it ends :(()) she taught me that I  have to be me , I don't have to act another to anyone , I  have to say what I feel , what  I think, just to be me:)) She said A quien le importa:) by a smile she taught me how to be happy, by a song she taught to say what I feel , and by thalia I learn how to "arrasando por la vida" .

This one is from our talented entry from Puerto Rico, written by Elizabeth Flansberg:

What Thalia Has Taught Me

First of all, I want to say that I grew up wathching Thalia's soap operas. I used to play of "Marimar"and "Maria Mercedes", when I was a child. I would memorize the script to play with my grandmother and sisters. Later on, I got the Marimar CD and learned her songs. That is how I started being a Thalia fan.

What have I learned from her? A lot of things: since scripts, songs to a way of being and seeing life. I say this because I have recorded her  t.v. and radio interviews  and realized that she is not only a super star, but a great person . She is a very prepared, cultured professional that has all preparation one could have to be what she is; so I have learned one should try to be the best one in your work, and get the best preparation in order to do what you want.  She has taught me that most simple things in life count as well as great things. "Thaly" is as nice with a wealthy person as she is with poor one; so I have learned humility. Also, she is always saying "thanks" to someone or telling her loved ones how much she loves them. That particular detail has helped me a lot with my family, one has to express one's feelings.

Thalia has also taught me a lot of words. Every time she says a word I don't    understand, I look for it in a dictionary. The same happens when she mentions things such "aztecs", "toltecs", "bali",etc... I head up to an encyclopedia. Some people that know mw say that I have some of her gestures, I guess I learned them watching her soap operas. The same way I have learned mexican slang. The most important thing Thalia has taught me is that you should do what you want and work to accomplish your dreams, as she hes done and that there is nothing completely impossible. You have to believe in yourself.

which would you choose?
Everyone who joined the contest did a swell job and we felt that they did not deserve to leave empty handed so we are giving the following people free copies of the TV y Novelas magazine on the left that has Thalia on the cover. Congratulations to the following people:

Does Tommy Mottola Control Thalia's Career Like He Did Mariah Carey's?

Q: Sony Music honcho Tommy Mottola has a new songbird wife. Does he control her career like he did ex-wife's Mariah Carey's? - Tom Morgan, Portland, Maine

A: "No one makes decisions for me." says the 3rd Mrs. Mottola, 30, a former Mexican soap opera diva, known simply as Thalia. "On the other hand, my husband has directed the careers of many major artists, like Jennifer Lopez, so I'd be stupid not to respect his opinions." Her first all English album is due in February. Then, like J.Lo, Thalia plans to produce a line of cosmetics.

Thalia fans worldwide are bouncing along singing "A quién le importa"

Back to work for Thalía

The nightmare is over for Thalía and her family with the liberation of her sisters, so her record label is already getting ready a promotional plan for launching the third single from her self-titled album. EMI Latin in the United states announced yesterday that they will launch the promotion of the new single "A Quién le Importa" at the end of November or the beginning of December. For many weeks, Thalía's hit song "No Me Enseñaste" has occupied the top of the charts at Billboard.

"The people who manage Thalía have asked us to drop all questions about her sisters, but with yesterday's news (of the release of Ernestina) we are trying to get ready for what will come afterwards for Thalía," stated a spokesman for EMI Latin in Miami. The record company's plan is to launch the third single before the end of November in order to take advantage of sales for Christmas.

At Thalía's offices in New York, they announced that the success of the CD Thalía 2002 has already reached Asia and the Middle East.

(Note: We believe that the reason "A quién Le Importa" was chosen as the next single is very clever. "No me enseñaste" has had fantastic success all over the US, but it was finally displaced by "Aserejé" by Las Ketchup. Aserejé is a very bouncy song with a lot of rhythm. Therefore, we conjecture that Thalia's single was chosen on the basis of it's similar appeal. Thalia fans worldwide are bouncing along singing "A quién le importa" and this might be a very smart move to bring it out now as a single.

The recent misfortunes that have fallen over her family have not held Thalia back. Because all work was already completed at the time her sisters were kidnapped, at the end of October Thalia will debut as an editor of a special 16-page supplement which will be included in the magazine Buen Hogar. Thalia's picture will also be on the front of that November issue of the magazine.

Some of the sections in which the artist participated will be "Your little grain of sand", in which she will point out the charitable efforts by people in the entertainment industry who are involved in various social causes. There will also be interviews in the form of advice on fashion and physical and mental health, according to a press release from Editorial Televisa, the publisher responsible for Buen Hogar. There will also be a comic strip titled "Thalia to the Rescue", and a feature called "Me Encanta" (I adore), in which she reveals her tastes and preferences about perfumes, clothes, and accessories.

Mexico City authorities say they are zeroing in on group that kidnapped singer Thalia's sisters

MEXICO CITY - Two sisters of Mexican singer and soap queen Thalia were abducted by the largest kidnapping ring in Mexico City, the city's top kidnapping prosecutor said Thursday. He predicted arrests soon.

Laura Zapata and Ernestina Sodi were abducted from their car Sept. 22 as they were leaving a play in which Zapata had a starring role. Zapata was released 18 days later, and Sodi was freed on Saturday.

Zapata has indicated publically that her family paid a ransom but has refused to give the amount. She said Thalia and her husband, Sony Music Chairman Tommy Mottola, did not contribute to it.

The family asked police to stay out of the case and hired a private team to carry out negotiations with the kidnappers.

Top prosecutor Jesus Jimenez Granados said in a phone interview that authorities are "almost certain" the assailants who abducted Thalia's sisters were members of the largest kidnapping gang operating in Mexico's capital.

Police believe the gang has been behind 114 of the 133 Mexico City kidnappings reported this year, Jimenez Granados said. Dozens of other kidnappings go unreported because families fear the involvement of current or former police officers in the crimes.

Zapata has said she and her sister planned to leave Mexico after the kidnappings, but hasn't said where they would go.

Appearing outside her Mexico City home on Tuesday, Zapata objected to reports that the ransom payment was in the millions.

"Please, enough of the speculation, because it is putting the integrity of my family in danger," Zapata said. "Enough of saying we are rich!"

Zapata said Thalia's husband, Sony Music Chairman Tommy Mottola, did not help pay the ransom.

Zapata told reporters gathered outside her house, "What was handed over was a minimum amount from my family."

"We don't earn huge amounts of money," Zapata said. "We are women working for our families without any man behind us."

She said her sister Ernestina was in "poor health" after behind held for more than a month. Zapata added that the two would leave Mexico, but she didn't say where they would go or for how long.

MEXICO CITY - The sisters of Mexican actress and Latin Grammy performer Thalia plan to leave Mexico after they were kidnapped from their car.

Laura Zapata and her sister Ernestina Sodi were kidnapped Sept. 22 after they left a play in which Zapata had a starring role. Zapata was released 18 days later, and Sodi was freed on Saturday.

In one of her first public appearances since her release, Zapata asked the public and the press to leave her family alone.

"Please, enough of the speculation, because it is putting the integrity of my family in danger," Zapata said. "Enough of saying we are rich!"

Appearing outside her Mexico City home on Tuesday, she said her sister Ernestina was in "poor health" after behind held for more than a month. Zapata added that the two would leave Mexico, but she didn't say where they would go or for how long.

Both Zapata and her sister Thalia, who is married to Sony Music Chairman Tommy Mottola, had earlier thanked the public for their support throughout the ordeal.

Zapata said Mottola and Thalia did not help pay the ransom. She said their accounts in the United States were frozen immediately after the kidnapping.

"I am asking you to respect the situation," Zapata told reporters gathered outside her house. "What was handed over was a minimum amount from my family."

The family asked police to stay out of the case and hired a private team to carry out negotiations with the kidnappers. Family members reportedly paid ransoms in the millions of dollars, but Zapata refused to confirm that.

"We don't earn huge amounts of money," Zapata said. "We are women working for our families without any man behind us. ... Everything the press has said in pure speculation."

Thalia relieved sister freed from kidnappers

Mexican singer Thalia said Tuesday she was relieved that kidnappers had freed her sister Ernestina Sodi after 36 days in captivity.

Thalia, 30, the star of such soaps as "Marimar" and "Rosalinda," and frequent MTV performer, lives in the United States with her husband, Sony Music chief Tommy Mottola.

"First of all and most importantly, I would like to thank God," read a brief statement on the release on Thalia's official website on Tuesday.

"I would also like to thank everyone for their support and prayers throughout this extremely difficult ordeal. On behalf of my family, I thank you from the bottom of my heart," the statement read.

Federal Investigation Agency chief Jose Luis Santiago told reporters Monday the high-profile kidnapping case had come to a close - at least for its victims, as the abductors freed Sodi on Saturday.

Two of Thalia's sisters, Sodi and Laura Zapata - also a popular actress - were abducted on Sept. 22 as they left Mexico City's Fine Arts Palace where Zapata was starring in a play.

Zapata, 46, was released on Oct. 10 after 18 days of captivity, uninjured and in good health. According to a report Tuesday in Reforma daily, Thalia paid 10 million dollars in ransom for both her sisters' release.

The nation has a thriving soap opera and music industry. Mexican soaps are translated and broadcast around the world, while many singers are attempting to broaden their appeal beyond their Spanish-speaking fans.

Mexico is believed to have one of the worst kidnapping problems in the world, second only to Colombia.

Thalia thanks public for support during sisters' kidnapping

MEXICO CITY - Mexican singer and Latin Grammy performer Thalia thanked the public for their "support and prayers" after her two sisters were kidnapped in Mexico City.

The statement released by her publicist Monday was the first the singer and actress had made since her sisters were kidnapped Sept. 22. Her husband, Sony Music Chairman Tommy Mottola, has not spoken publicly about the kidnappings.

"First of all and most importantly, I would like to thank God," the statement said. "I would also like to thank everyone for their support and prayers throughout this extremely difficult ordeal. On behalf of my family, I thank you from the bottom of my heart."

Ernestina Sodi, co-author of a book about Mexico's presidential residence, was released Saturday by kidnappers. She and her sister, Laura Zapata, were kidnapped after leaving a play in which Zapata had a starring role. Zapata was released Oct. 10.

The family hired a private team to carry out negotiations with the kidnappers, and asked police to stay out of the case. It was unclear if a ransom was paid.

In a telephone call to Televisa news anchor Joaquin Lopez Doriga late Monday, Zapata said Mottola did not help resolve the case.

"Everything was a family matter," she said.

No arrests have been made.

Kidnappings are common in Mexico but many go unreported, partly because family members fear police may be involved or the victim could be killed during a botched rescue attempt.

President Vicente Fox's government has tried to crack down on crime, and Mexico City recently hired former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani to help reduce kidnappings and other assaults.
