From comadre to madrinaSource:
El Norte, January 16, 2003 Thalía not only cared about being Itatí Cantoral's comadre, but now she will also be her madrina, since Carmen Salinas invited her to unveil the plaque for 1,000 performances of Aventurera during the tour which they will realize throughout the United States. The actress and singer, who presently is promoting her new single "A Quien le Importa", already committed herself to the producer and the star of the play, which will be presented beginning in March in America. |

"Thalía already agreed to be the madrina of the 1,000 performances, and we even wanted to organize the ceremony during the presentations in Mérida (in Yúcatan, Mexico) but things got a little complicated for us because she had other commitments, she had to be in New York at that time and was not able to travel to there. Then we spoke with her and she told us that in whatever reorganization of the schedule she would be able to make the presentation. So it was that she agreed to change the date of the ceremony so that she could be madrina of the play," explained Chato Cejudo, manager for Carmen Salinas, who besides acting in the play on stage also produces it.

The singer, added Cejudo, accepted the
invitation to unveil the plaque because, besides being
the godmother of Itatí Cantoral's twin sons, she is also
a close friend of Salinas. "It is here that she will have a double role, they are a trio", he said. "For Carmen, Thalía and Itatí are like daughters, and besides the two girls are comadres and whenever they can they get together in order to have a good time." The date in which the unveiling will take place still has not been decided, but according to the statements which Itatí has made, the most probable is that it will be during the time in which the work will be on Broadway (in New York City). Itatí and Carmen Salinas were meeting last Wednesday with Mitzy, who will do the new wardrobe for Aventurera. It is tradition that the protagonist always has a completely new wardrobe whenever the stars change or, in this case, whenever the tour departs for a completely new phase, like the tour in the US. (That way, even people who have seen the show before will enjoy coming back to see a "different version") |
"The problem that they have right now is that they can't come to an agreement about the colors of the dresses, which they want to make something very spectacular," commented Cejudo.
Itatí Cantoral is already ready to rejoin the cast, together with her husband Eduardo Santamarina, who will play the part of the promoter, while Carmen Salinas is in negotiations with Jorge Salinas to interpret the leading man. (Note: Jorge, besides acting lead roles in telenovelas, appears on stage in the Chippendales-style male revue "Solo Para Mujeres" - which means For Women Only, and thus most of Mexico has seen a LOT of Jorge before :D)

The singer and actress Thalía was invited to the production of Aventurera so that she might present a plaque for 1,000 performances, while the work is on tour throughout the United States.
At that time her good friend Itatí Cantoral will have returned to the lead role. "A year ago when Thalía was in New York we proposed to her that she come to present the plaque, since she is Itatí's comadre, and at that time she accepted. Now it only remains for her to arrange her other commitments with the date which we proposed. We expect to receive her answer very soon," stated "El Chato" Cejudo, public relations chief for the play.
The first week of February, the play will reinitiate its run in the Tropicoso Center, and actress Adriana Fonseca will give her last three performances. According to Cejudo, Fonseca will act on the 6th, 7th, and 8th of February; after that, Itatí Cantoral and her husband Eduardo Santamarina will again join the cast.
Cejudo commented that actually Aventurera has reached 1,352 performances, but they are only celebrating number 1,000 because the tradition is to celebrate a round number.
| For
the fans who had not previously heard about "Aventurera"
and how it relates to Thalía, here is a brief
explanation: "Aventurera" is a dinner theater musical revue which is produced by Carmen Salinas, who as you know has been in all of Thalía's novelas. It has been running, off and on, for many years in Mexico and always makes news because of the famous women who appear in the leading role. The word "aventurera" is not a compliment in Mexico, it sort of means "gold-digger" and refers to a woman who is out to earn her fortune by hooking up with a man she can take advantage of. But in this play it covers the life of a poor girl who is led into the life of an exotic dancer by her supposed boyfriend. |

Itatí
Cantoral has played the part of Aventurera twice now, and
she will resume this role again very soon, since she and
her family are back in Mexico after a year in Brazil
filming "Vale Todo." At the present time the
part is being played by Adriana Fonseca, who is
universally disliked because she can't dance and is too
short to be seen over the rest of the cast. Other stars
who have appeared in the role are Edith Gonzalez,
Patricia Navidad, and Niurka Marcos (who got plastic
surgery so that she could look good in the skimpy
costumes). Aventurera is a TOURING musical review. It travels all around Mexico, and after Itatí resumes the starring role it will also be booked into cities in the US, so people who live in the US should make an effort to see if it is near them. Itatí's real-life husband, Eduardo Santamarina, is also in the play; he does the part of the sleazy boyfriend. The "madrina" or "padrino" is a title of honor given for just one show usually, in whatever location they happen to be at the time. The madrina or padrino introduces the play to the audience at the opening curtain. Thalía was supposed to have done this over a year ago and backed out. We have no guarantee that she will be there this time either. But she has a standing invitation from Carmen Salinas, so she can be madrina whenever it is convenient. |

Thalía, Odalys García, Sissi, Pilar Montenegro, Alejandra Guzmán, and the grupera Jennifer Peña, among other Mexican and Latin stars, will shine at the awarding of the Premios Lo Nuestro, which will be held on February 5th.
For the title of Female Artist of 2003 Thalía will be competing with Alejandra Guzmán, Jennifer Peña, Laura Paussini, Paulina Rubio, Shakira, and Pilar Montenegro. With a total of three nominations, she is also invited to participate with a musical number.
Last year the singer did not perform in these awards although she had a nomination for her record Thalía, Grandes Éxitos con Banda.
"Thalía has an invitation to participate in the awards program, but as of right now it has not been confirmed that she will be in the event", informed the offices of Tommy Mottola's wife in New York.

| Thalía unexpectedly entered the list of
danceable songs on Billboard with "Dance Dance (The
Mexican)", where she occupies the number 18th place
among the songs most played in discos and US nightclubs.
She is presently promoting "A Quién le Importa"
in the United States for the Latino market; but
nevertheless, it is with the duet with Marc Anthony that
she is showing up on the radio in the Anglo Saxon market,
due to the fact that a remix was made which is very
danceable and catchy. "'Dance Dance (The Mexican)' has been on the Billboard charts of the American market for five weeks. In its fourth week it occupied place 26, but now it has risen to number 18. It's on a good track", informed a spokesperson from Thalía's office in New York. The theme "The Mexican 2002" is part of the album "Thalía" and comes included in both English and Spanish. "But the version on Billboard is a remix of 'The Mexican 2002' realized by Hex Hector, it is different from the original version on the record", explained the source. To enter the Anglo Saxon market in this form is an important step for the artist, who will make a record production for the public of this sector. "The record in English is already on the way, and she is working now on that. There are great expectations, but it is still not being mentioned who will be the producer". (NOTE: Hey! Now wait a minute. Is this record finished like Thalia said last year or not???!) "Thalía", her most recent CD, has been 33 weeks on the list of most-sold records in the Hispanic market, also on Billboard Magazine, added the spokesperson. |

After
Tommy Mottola announced his resignation from Sony, the
rumors in New York pointed to the thought that his wife
Thalía would be among the first to sign with him. "It's not official that he wants to record Thalía's music, but she, although still with EMI Music, does not have long remaining before her contract ends and logic dictates that since she is seeking internationalization, how better to achieve it than with this 'monster' of knowledge and experience that is her husband", indicated an employee of Sony Music New York, where Mottola used to work. Ever since Thalía married the friend of stars such as Gloria Estefan and Jennifer Lopez, the most persistent rumors about her career were that sooner or later she was going to resort to her husband in order to launch herself into the international market, such as Shakira recently has done. Through Howard Stringer, a director of de Sony Music, Tommy sent a letter yesterday to all the directors of the firm around the world. In it he expressed his desire to begin his own record label, which he would like to be able to associate with the enterprise to allow distribution and make it effective in the marketplace. |
"I have been thinking about taking this new challenge for a year, and I just made the decision to go forward with this," stated Mottola in the missive.
According to Stringer, Tommy is a visionary executive, talented, and with the suitable relationships to propel the business of the record industry, the same which has converted him into an icon.

Tommy Mottola--Sony Music's high-powered chairman and chief executive, the mastermind behind the careers of Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Jennifer Lopez, among others, and the object of Michael Jackson's much publicized ire last summer--has stepped down from his post effective immediately. In a surprise move, Mottola, 52, and Sony jointly announced Thursday that he was leaving the company after 14 years to launch his own label.
"I have been thinking about taking up this new challenge for about a year, and really made the decision to go forward only recently," he said in a statement. "I am thrilled that I will continue my long-standing relationship with Sony to create a company that I believe will become a blueprint for the music business in the coming years."
Mottola's new venture doesn't have a name. Although Sony is assisting with the formation and eventual distribution of the new label, Mottola is not expected to take any Sony artists with him.
The timing of the announcement will definitely raise eyebrows. As recently as this summer Mottola was reportedly trying to extend his deal with Sony beyond 2004, when his current contract was due to expire. (Sony agreed to release him from the final two years.) He had also embarked on a new marketing campaign tying his superstars like Dion and Destiny's Child's Beyoncé to major products as a way to extend their reach. Dion will be singing in Chrysler ads, Knowles for Pepsi.
| Mottola
got his star in the music biz as the manager of Hall
& Oates, Carly Simon and John Mellencamp. He joined
Sony Music as president in 1988 (back when it was CBS
Records), taking over a talent roster that included
Jackson, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen. He
brought new talent to the label, including his eventual
wife Carey. During his tenure, Sony Music launched the
careers of Dion, Lopez, Destiny's Child, Dixie Chicks,
Pearl Jam, Shakira, Nas, Xzibit, Ricky Martin, Marc
Anthony, John Mayer, Korn, Train and, for better or
worse, Kelly Osbourne. He recently signed AC/DC and its
lucrative back catalog to Sony's Epic label. But for all his music biz successes, Mottola has generated the most ink for a series of tabloid-friendly incidents. Vanity Fair once reported he was connected to the Mob (Note: Vanity Fair actually said Tommy liked to pretend he was associated with the Mob). His marriage and breakup with Carey (nearly 20 years his junior) played out in the gossip sheets, and she eventually took her 50 million album sales to another label. (Note: AS IF! Mariah may have sold that many records during her career WITH Sony, but since she left she has probably sold less than Michael Jackson.) |

Last year was especially rough for Mottola. Not only did Sony's market share slip, but he was the subject of the Jacko attack. The singer claimed Mottola was "mean, he's a racist, and he's very, very devilish" and was responsible for the failure of Jackson's Invincible album. Mottola denied the allegations, and several artists and industry executives of color came to his defense. Then, in September, Mottola suffered through the abduction and release of the two sisters of his current wife, Mexican pop singer and actress Thalia.
Sony said it expects to name a successor within days.

The 14-year reign of Tommy Mottola at Sony Music is over.
According to sources at Sony Music, where the phones have not stopped ringing, Mottola only found out he was leaving when he arrived this morning at 550 Madison. "He was told to go see Sir Howard Stringer, and when he got there they handed him a press release," my source said. Mottola was then given a couple of hours to clear out his office. A deal for a record label was, according to sources, Sony's resolution of the last year of his contract.
Also swirling around 550 Madison: the news that Epic Records' beloved chief Dave Glew will retire, and that veteran Columbia Records exec Mel Ilberman will as well. Now the big question is who will replace Mottola, and speculation is already pointing toward Bob Bowlin, already part of the Sony corporate structure and a friend of Stringer and Kevin Kelleher, will assume Mottola's duties. Another rumor has it that former Warner Bros. Home Video head Warren Lieberfarb, who left his own post suddenly last month with no explanation despite much success, may be headed for the job.
Earlier it was reported that Mottola resigned this afternoon as CEO, although it is more true to say that Sony refused to give in to his contract demands. His contract was said to be ending in 2004.
The Japanese owners of Sony had a lot on their minds when it came to Mottola's future. The talented but volatile music executive personally forced out two of Sony's major stars, Mariah Carey (his ex-wife) and Michael Jackson. In the case of the former, the embarrassing story of Mottola allegedly stealing music from Carey's Glitter album and passing it to Jennifer Lopez didn't help much. Carey was able to use that information as leverage to leave her Sony contract one album early.
In the case of Jackson, the complicated goings-on regarding his finances and the Beatles catalog culminated last summer in Jackson riding around Manhattan with a megaphone calling Mottola a racist. If there's one thing companies like Sony don't like, it's public humiliation. And Stringer, who runs Sony Entertainment, and is a class act, was never amused by Mottola's antics.
There was also the very public fight over royalties with the Dixie Chicks, and the company's inability to make Celine Dion's recent album more than a middling hit.
![]() |
But in
the end, Mottola's ouster is more a result of bottom line
numbers. Sony Music is No. 3 on the list of music
companies and Columbia Records is third on the list of
labels. The failure of the company to market albums by
Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony and other acts sent their
bottom line into a tailspin, and in the end it doesn't
matter who likes you or who you don't like. It's about
the money. Of course, Mottola's hot temper didn't help. If you fell out of favor or seemed to be disloyal, bada bing security guards escorted you to the door. With Mottola gone, there will now be rampant speculation about the future of his group including Don Ienner, Polly Anthony and most especially Michelle Anthony (the two are not related). There are going to be massive changes at Sony. One can only wonder if they'll end with the return of Michael Jackson. Stranger things have happened. And what of Mottola? He'll start his own label, he has zillions of dollars, and still strikes fear into the hearts of strangers. He has always had a percentage interest in his own management company and that will be a place from which he can draw talent. I'll say this for him: for a long time, longer than most, Tommy Mottola made Sony/Columbia and the record business really interesting. Even when he was tough or seemed out of control, he was kind of brilliant. And he loved the music. That's not a bad legacy. |
