| They had
celebrated a banquet in his honor south of the city, in
San Angel. He had been re-elected President of Mexico a
few days before. That day, April 7, 1928, Alvaro Obregón
was assassinated. They said that Plutarco Elías Calles,
the ex-president, ordered him killed in order to recover
power. The murderer was José León Toral. His case was
historic, not only for the crime, but because they were
never able to declare him guilty, thanks to the skill of
his defense counsel, Demetrio Sodi Guergue, Thalia's
grandfather. "What's more, my grandfather has a lecture hall named after him in UNAM (the public university of Mexico City)". The proofs are securely kept in the library of a large old house where she lived with her mother when her career had barely begun. There, in "The House of the Dogs" (the untiring guardians of the sidewalk and the fear of people passing by), in the working-class neighborhood of Santa María la Ribera in Mexico City, Thalia bumps into the political past of the Sodi family. She carries it in her blood. She declares herself "apolitical" in a "multi-party" family. In the middle of the promotion of her first English record, Thalía, and her new single "I Want You", she makes time to visit Mexico. "I don't do it publicly, I go camouflaged, in hiding, and I see my friends." |

Are you frightened by the lack of security?
"Yes," she says after thinking about it more than twice. "One wants to see his country free, the people walking around in the streets without fear, with better salaries, with a much stronger government...".

Would
you go into politics someday? "I am completely apolitical, to tell the truth. But in my family politics has always run in the blood. My grandfather (Demetrio Sodi Guergue) defended José de León Toral, who was the murderer of Alvaro Obregón. On the other hand, my father (Ernesto Sodi Pallares) worked in criminology and was the handwriting expert in the government of (Luis) Echeverría (President of Mexico from 1970-1976). One of my sisters (Ernestina) has been working in the ranks of PRI for 9 years, and now Laura (Zapata) is joining the ranks of PAN. Then we are totally a multi-party family." Do you support Laura in politics? "I am apolitical, but if my sister's dream is to be here and if it makes her feel that she is getting ahead and it is giving her a new energy to her life, I am here with her." Her sister Laura, a former telenovela villainess and character actress, is running for the position of federal deputy (congressional) through the party in power in order to fight crime in Mexico, after her kidnapping of several months ago. Singer Thalia urges end to terrorSource:
BBC News - June 2, 2003 Latin pop star Thalia has called for an end to terrorism in Mexico after returning to the country following the kidnapping of her two sisters. Thalia spent eight months in exile in the US after sisters Laura Zapata and Ernestina Sodi were kidnapped as they left a theatre in Mexico City in September last year. Both were later released unhurt. Thalia has been surrounded by a platoon of bodyguards since her arrival in Mexico on Friday amid fears she could also be a target of criminals. On her return the 30-year-old singer called for Mexico to become "more united and clean of terrorism, if not from all filth". She told the daily newspaper Reforma: "Terrorism is not only to attack airplanes and buildings, or cause wars, but to agitate against the integrity, calm and social peace of the nation." |

Mexico has one of the world's worst kidnapping problems - believed to be second only to that of Colombia. The nation has a thriving soap opera and music industry, with its drama series translated and broadcast around the world. Many of its singers are attempting to broaden their appeal beyond their Spanish-speaking fans. Thalia, a star of TV soaps as Marimar and Rosalinda, is married to Tommy Mottola, the US-based former chairman of Sony Music.

You can order the VINYL record release of I Want You at towerrecords.com now. It's in vinyl so it requires a special record player. This is a very old format that is no and the player is no longer commercially available. Well, maybe at antique shops. If anything, this record will only become a collectors item because of its format.

Thalia, who has a pair of recordings sharing space on the Latin charts, has wrapped recording of her English-language debut and plans to release the album July 8th on Virgin. The untitled project (Note: By this time everyone who was in the know knew that Thalia entitled the English release just that, Thalia.) follows Thalia's breakthrough 2002 self-titled recording, which featured all Spanish-language material, save "The Mexican," her hit single, featuring a guest vocal by Marc Anthony.
| Having
sold more than 7 million records in the international
Latin market, the Mexico native now looks to tap a
broader American audience, much the same way Anthony and
Shakira did with their English-language recordings.
Already, four of her albums -- En Extasis (1995), Amor
a la Mexicana (1997), Arrasando (2000) and Thalia
-- have been certified platinum in the U.S. Several
producers, some who have helped record crossover
successes, contributed to the upcoming album, including
Steve Morales (Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias),
Cory Rooney (Destiny's Child) and Rick Wake (Marc Anthony).
An entertainer before the age of ten, Thalia recorded with a pair of popular teen pop ensembles, Din-Din and Timbiriche, in addition to starring in soap operas throughout the Eighties and Nineties. Her first album, also self-titled, was released in 1990. Thalia's new single, "I Want You," which features a guest vocal by Fat Joe, has already been released to radio. |

Latin singer Thalia will release her English-language debut July 7 (Note: So we all just thought it was July 8?) through Virgin. The first single from "Thalia" is "I Want You" with Fat Joe. The duet debuted this week at No. 27 on the Rhythmic Top 40 chart published by Billboard's sister publication Airplay Monitor. The Mexican superstar worked with a host of producers on the album, including Steve Morales (Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias), Rick Wake (Anastacia, Marc Anthony), and Cory Rooney (Jennifer Lopez, Destiny's Child).
Last year, Thalia released a Spanish-language Fonovisa/EMI Latin album (Note: Waitaminit! Thalia stopped recording under the Fonovisa label ages ago! Also, EMI and Fonovisa have no relation to each other.) under the same title. Earlier this month, the album was named the Latin pop album of the year, female at the Billboard Latin Music Awards in Miami. The set debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Latin Pop Albums and Top Latin Albums charts, and No. 126 on The Billboard 200.
In April, Mexican police arrested three suspects in relation to last year's kidnapping of Thalia's sisters, actress Laura Zapata and writer Ernestina Sodi. The pair were abducted in September after Zapata appeared in a play. The family, which includes Thalia's husband, former Sony Music chairman Tommy Mottola, has indicated that a ransom was paid for their safe release, but has not disclosed any details.

Mottola Turns Profit on Former Tyco CondoSource:
New York Post - May 22, 2003 MUSIC mogul Tommy Mottola has managed to do what many residential real estate investors have failed to do in the sagging high-end property market - flip a property, and make a profit. Mottola, as this column's regular readers may recall, bought the duplex penthouse of besieged former Tyco chief financial officer Mark Swartz - which had an asking price of $15.9 million - for the bargain price of $9.5 million last December. Then the former Sony Music chairman turned around and immediately relisted the 5,200-square- foot place for its original asking price of $15.9 million. "I thought that they forgot to take the listing off of their Web site," said one broker of the Douglas Elliman listing after they had brokered the sale between Swartz and Mottola. Listing broker Dolly Lenz did not return phone calls. Now comes word that Mottola has sold the pad (still filled with Swartz' furnishings) in a package deal worth just under $13 million. Located on the 28th and 29th floors on East 80th Street, the four-bedroom condo has seven bathrooms, a private elevator entrance and a huge gourmet kitchen. Although Mottola got a bargain and a nice chunk of change in his pocket, Swartz's investment did well enough for Tyco, which reaped the proceeds of the sale: Records show the then-CFO bought the condo in May 2000 for $7.7 million. Swartz listed the place a few months later in a then-booming market for $12.5 million; he jacked it up to $16.5 million the next year, then down to $15.9 million. On the right is a picture othe current Residence of Tommy and Thalia. It took more than 2 years of remodelling to get it to their specifications. |
