thalia Mottolizada? TV y Novelas cover page

"Simply Thalía"

An exclusive interview with the diva

The diva breaks her matrimonial silence to continue "arrasando", doing honor to the song that she is presently promoting which belongs to her most recent musical production. And she reveals that, artistically, she will continue calling herself Thalía, without using the last name of her powerful husband, Tommy Mottola, president of Sony Music.

Her image reiterates the sensuality that has always enveloped her, while her voice, more sweet and captivating, unleashes again that strange chemistry of innocence/sensuality which had converted her into the queen of the Mexican telenovelas.

It is Thalía who agreed to converse with TV y Novelas about everything, except for her private life. But it is inevitable. The eyes of the world of the Latin entertainment industry are still fixed on the spectacular wedding held in the middle of downtown New York, amidst a sea of fans who fought each other in order to see even a piece of the 16-meter train of her half-million dollar dress. Her admirers want to know it all. They want it with all the details of what she did or stopped doing after her wedding, but Thalía resists.

And she has her reasons, this girl, now a married lady, favorite of the public, to increase her "conjugal silence."

"Last year there was so much being said about my private life that I would like to avoid having the same thing happen now. I only want to talk about my artistic career, about my most recent record production, Arrasando, which is what I am promoting at this time."

Without making an unfavorable comparison with the achievements of the actress and singer, who has seven records as a soloist, not to mention those which she made when she was a child star, first in the group Din Din, and later in Timbiriche, what a difficult condition to comply with!

--One of your great surprises with Arrasando is your facet of composer. Part of the lyrics say: "If I get fat, if I get thin… today I have an answer to whatever survey…there is no darkness that may cover this light that dazzles in me. The light that you are making reference to, does it have a name?

"Yes, it is God. He is the light that shines from inside out," she affirmed serenely.

--Since when did you have this light in your life?

"Always. He is in all aspects of my life and guides every one of my steps. I feel his love in everything. In my work, in my family, in my mate, and in life."

--In this very same song you mention the speculations and commentaries that there are all around you. Now that you are married they are increasing somewhat: about your pregnancy. On one side it has been said that you are pregnant, on the other that you are submitting to a treatment in order to get pregnant because supposedly the diets have affected your body. With all these speculations, haven't you considered writing "Arrasando 2?"

" I agree that the way the speculations are going about my life I would have to write Arrasando Number 2, 3, and 4. Many Arrasandos! Some people ought to just put a gag on their mouth so that they don't say stupid things."

--It was said there was a movie project with big Hollywood celebrities…

"There are many plans and proposals. We are studying them. You have to make decisions calmly and with good judgment. When I have something totally defined I will talk about it. For the moment I am not going to talk about anything in advance that has not been firmed up."

--How is your record in English coming along?

"I am getting prepared to give the best of myself to the public which always has supported me. If somebody takes a peek, welcome. It is not new for me to record in English. I did it before for the public of the Philippines, and from this record I recorded the English version of three songs: "Arrasando", "Entre el Mar y Una Estrella", and "Regresa a Mí." I already make a video in English of "Arrasando", directed by Simon Brand. It is very modern, with a lot of dancing and choreography."

--We know that they are seeing your telenovelas in more than 180 countries. Do you intend to abandon this audience who follows you day by day in this genre?

Scene from the Regresa Mi Spanish version mtv

"No! I do not intend to leave the telenovelas. I am simply taking a rest. I can't leave a genre that has contributed to and meant so much in my life. You know, recently Televisa held a survey in which they determined that the Trilogy of the Marias which they made had been seen by more than a billion people throughout the whole world. Imagine! All those people who have given me the privilege of being received as a guest in their houses through the television. It is an honor for me to continue accompanying them because they have stayed faithful to my work."

--What happened to the second wedding that you were to have in Mexico?

"A lot of speculations have been made about a second wedding, but that can't be, because the Catholic church itself prohibits getting married two times, even less when you get married like us, in such an important church as Saint Patrick's in New York. It is very probable that Tommy and I will hold a Mass of Thanksgiving in Puebla, a place which brings together many memories in me and where I have so many loved ones."

--When will this be?

"Possibly before the summer." Thalía wants to hold this symbolic rite in the Church of the Holy Rosary, a temple where her late father, Ernesto Sodi Palhares, took her when she was a little girl.

The star didn't want to skip over a special thank you to the public which followed step by step the details of her union with Tommy Mottola.

"What I can tell you is that I was touched by the fact that more than 10,000 people drove the New York Police Department crazy in order to be with me in that very special moment of my life. I am very grateful for this really marvelous gesture of my public, who accompanied me with their heart in those moments."

--Will you use your married name?

Thalía paused, and then after thinking, responded: "Artistically, no.,"

Besides riding around in a boat, buying shoes, and eating sushi, Thalía and Tommy have a hobby that is almost like a state secret.

"We travel incognito to Mexico a lot. Nobody imagines where we go. I like very much to eat my tacos and my enchiladas. But what I am going to tell you happened to us in a really luxurious Chinese restaurant . After the meal, they brought me a fortune cookie. When I opened it, it had a typical little fortune cookie message, nothing special. But suddenly, when I was drinking my tea, the waiter brought me another fortune cookie and asked me to please open it. I answered him that I already had opened it. But he insisted and then I opened it. The message said: 'We wish you the best, we love you very much. Congratulations.' It was a very beautiful action!"

The queen of the telenovelas, Thalía, became moved with this detail prepared by some fans, near her table. And with this anecdote the conversation was finished, leaving us with a happy ending…like in her Marias.

At the Grammy Awards with Tommy and Thalía

At one of the night club celebrations after the Grammy Music Awards this Wednesday night, reporters encountered Thalía and Tommy making the rounds. Here is a brief clip of her statements (they are very happy, very much in love, etc.), and as you can see, Tommy has learned to say "enamorados" very well :D

Sony Records did very well in the winnings, as usual, and one of the Estefan protegees under contract to Sony, Shakira, carried off the best Latin Album award, beating even Gloria Estefan. The same album, "MTV Unplugged", was also the Rock Album of the Year at Premios Lo Nuestro.

She took it off for a good cause, her striking zebra-print pants suit, that is, which was made famous during her "Birthday Show" appearance on El Gordo y La Flaca last August. It ended up in the possession of a young American businessman type who only knew one word of Spanish: "Arrasando!"

The Zebra outfit as worn by Thalia on the Gordo Y La Flaca Birthday Special

A charity auction held in Miami this last weekend featured items of clothing donated by several Miami-area music stars, Thalía and Madonna among them, and for completely incomprehensible reasons nobody notified the fans. A worn-out pair of red shoes from Madonna went for $1,000 and Thalía's suit (which is probably a size 3) for only $450, which is possibly less than she paid for it originally. Good grief! Were they trying to make some money for that cause of theirs or was this just supposed to be a society get-together so that the well-dressed people could walk around the decadent Versace mansion (when Gianni was murdered on the front steps) and drink champagne? They could have easily raised three times that much on Ebay or by even posting something on Thalía.com.

Please! You "In Crowd" people are missing the point! Let the fans be involved in these events and they will show you what real support is! They have a right to be included, because it would have been the thrill of a lifetime for a real fan to win something owned by Thalía.

Casa Mottola still not ready, but Thalia has moved everything to Miami

The little love nest which Thalia and Tommy Mottola are building on exclusive Star Island in Miami, next door to their old friends and business associates, the Estefans, seems to be going very slowly. The land was purchased and plans were drawn way back in 1999 when Thalia and Tommy formalized their relationship, but the huge compound still is not ready for occupancy. Of course, Thalia has the other huge house on Biscayne Bay which she bought last year, but that is where her mother lives and the couple had been expecting to be in their own place by now.

Mr. and Mrs. Mottola had planned to give a great New Years Eve party last December 31 in order to inaugurate this property, but due to the delays in the work, according to sources close to the couple, they spend their end of the year as husband and wife in the residence next to the Estefan home which they have come to know so well over the last few years.

Their new home has a striking view of the island and can be reached by a causeway or by launch. The residence will have a guest house at the main entrance, because Thalia is well known to enjoy having large family gatherings and big parties.

Unfinished Star Island mansion of Thalia and Tommy Mottola
The mysterious Star Island mansion: How much longer to finish?

The great affection that the Mexican singer feels for Miami has led her to plan having one of her weddings in this Florida port. She even commented recently that she transferred her work offices to this city from their former location in the Televisa installations in Mexico.

Until now, Thalia and Tommy's mansion looks gray (Note: unpainted stucco) and some workers are carrying out their activities during the day. This residence will be in the baroque style that Thalia likes so much, similar to the one they own in New York. Touists and other nosey people have a spectacular view of the mansion, since although it is located in a private area they can observe it from a launch through a tour which is offered in the port, or they can even make it out from the bridge which divides Star Island from the rest of the city.

An interview with Itatí Cantoral

The year 2001 will certainly be one of the busiest for Itatí Cantoral, since she not only returns to the theater for Aventurera, but also will participate in a telenovela where she will share credits with Angélica Rivera and the Puerto Rican Carlos Ponce. TV Notas spoke with the actress about her projects:

--How do you think you can manage both things, the telenovela and the work Aventurera?

"In first place is my family, my husband and my sons, which are the most important thing. I do not plan to neglect them. On the other hand, I will have to work under extreme pressure. It is a very great sacrifice for everybody, but I am doing what I like to do and I am with the people that I love."

--Does it matter to you that you can't sleep like before?

"It doesn't matter to me to be tired or to sleep little, but neither can I stop working because it is something that I love greatly. Nevertheless, my sons are ahead of everything else."

--Are you afraid that eventually you might neglect your little twins, Eddie and Roberto?

"No, because they are always with me. I have people who help me and take charge of them everywhere."

--Have you made any plan about meeting your obligations?

"More or less. From Monday to Friday I record the telenovela, Friday and Saturday I am in Aventurera, and on Sunday with my family."

--Which is your character and the subject of the telenovela that you are beginning?

"My character is named 'Raquel', she is 24 years old. I think that the subject has not been dealt with much - artificial insemination. This part really caught my attention, and I feel that I can squeeze a lot of juice out of it."

--In Aventurera you work with your husband, Eduardo Santamarina, in the part of "Lucio the Handsome." How do you feel sharing the stage with him?

"It is beautiful to do it. It is rare, but I love it. If I could be able to be with Eduardo 24 hours a day I would do it, I would not be separated from him. I am happy at his side, I don't need my own time nor space, my life revolves around him. Without Eduardo my life is not the same, if I can work, sleep, live, eat, and do everything together with him, what could be better!

--How are your children doing?

"Very well, thank God. They are very healthy, I don't have any problems with them."

--When will the rest of the babies come?

"I think that for the year 2002, and I hope that it will be a girl. But if it is a little boy it doesn't matter. Definitively yes, I want to have another son."

--Have you already baptized the children?

"Not yet. We are waiting because I want Thalía to be the godmother. She is already officially my comadre. We consider them to be a good example for our babies."

--Where did you get the idea for Thalía to be the godmother?

"From she herself. She always gave me good vibes, and what better godmother than she?" she concluded.

An outdoor baptism ceremony planned

Itatí Cantoral and husband Eduardo Santamarina have announced that their plans for the baptism of their twin sons will be carried out in the country style typical of Itatí's native state of Veracruz. The food and native customs will be as authentic as possible, with the extra touch that the ceremony will take place in the Pre-Columbian ruins of Zempoala -- provided they can get permission from the National Institute of Anthropology and History, the government agency in charge of this restricted area.

"It would be fantastic if it were there, but we are negotiating for them to lend us the site because there are no facilities for social events. What we are arguing is that it would also serve as a promotion for the site, since Thalía and Tommy will come accompanied by some friends from New York, and thus they will get to know it," Itatí said.

The idea, she added, is to make a tour through the ruins before and then afterwards carry out the baptism. Since they have not solidified said plans, there exists the option to move it to the banks of a river which flows into the sea.

"What we want is for it to be in a place in the open air, not in a salon, but the point is to have it in Veracruz," added Santamarina, who said that they are not in a hurry and if it is necessary they will postpone the date.

Cantoral, at the same time, explained that they want the interpreter of "Sangre" to be the godmother for their children because for six years she has been united to her by a solid friendship, thanks to the telenovela "María la del Barrio", where they met.

"The relationship is with her, but no way would we put another godfather when she already has her husband. I only met Tommy the day of the wedding, but he really impressed me because he treated us excellently. Thalía has a great dream of caring for my sons, especially because she also wants to be a mother," expressed the actress.

Meanwhile, the married couple began the tour of the work Aventurera, which will last until May and will travel to different cities such as Guadalajara, Cuernavaca, Villahermosa, Veracruz, Aguascalientes, León y Tijuana, among others. Produced by Carmen Salinas, it has a special meaning for the couple so in one way or another they always return. Originally, the part was written by Carlos Olmos for Cantoral, but she could not participate. Afterwards they gave her a second opportunity and then a third.

"The truth is that I am very grateful to Carmen for permitting me to return, although I know that it is a double responsibility because I can't be the same, or less, but this time I have to be much better," Itatí pledged.

For this time, she stated, there will be a new wardrobe created by Mitzy, and other choreography in addition to the two songs that she will interpret in each function. Nevertheless, the stated that her costumes will not show a lot of cleavage singe she likes to maintain the magic of the epoch of the first rumberas.

"I respect anyone who shows off their body, but for myself I like to give another facet to the character where she is sensual without showing too much," added Cantoral, who will begin next Monday the filming of the telenovela "Conceived Without Sin."

For his part, Santamarina will interpret Lucio the Handsome in Aventurera, a role which Luis Felipe Tovar and Francisco de la O developed previously. "First I was the galán, but now I am the one who sells "the aventurera." It is a very important character in the play and completely the opposite of what I have done in the telenovelas. Now I can break with the stereotype that I have in television."

(NOTE: Aventurera opened in Guadalajara this past week, and was a complete disaster because the sound system failed to function. There was a near riot and people demanded their money back. This was not the fault of Itatí and Eduardo, who struggled bravely to continue with the show, but there are some problems to be worked out with the production on the road.)

Thalia not appearing at Viña del Mar

Source: Reforma, January 20, 2001
TW Correspondent: Tonchi

Despite statements made by Thalia in interviews last year about finalizing her plans to appear at the Festival Viña del Mar in Chile, which is scheduled for the 21st through the 26th of February, she is not going.

The final list of entertainers has been released, and her name is not there. However, both Natalia Oreiro and Lucero ARE appearing. We do not know if this has something to do with Thalia pulling out of her negotiations with the organizers of the festival, but Lucero will not schedule any of her telenovelas when one by Thalia is being broadcast and she will not work for the same record label.

So it is possible that Thalia feels the same and decided that she no longer wanted to be involved this year. This is not animosity between the two telenovela and recording stars, they just purposely avoid being in direct competition with each other and that way they both get the full attention of their fan base.

Deluxe Godparents for Soraya's Twins

By: Miguel Garza
Source: univision.com Feb. 12, 2001
TW Correspondent: Tonci & Luisa

Itatí Cantoral and Eduardo Santamarina got their wish to get some deluxe compadres - Thalía and Tommy Mottola agreed to be the godparents of the little Santamarina Cantoral twins, Eduardo and Roberto Miguel, at their baptism this coming March 31st. That date, apart from the "volo"* and party, will go down in history because of who are the most famous compadres** of the entertainment community.

(*Note: The "volo" tradition requires the godfather (padrino) to give money to anybody who asks him for it after the ceremony. He has to carry a bag of coins with him, because the minute he steps outside he will be mobbed by urchins who hang around the churches on the weekends in hopes of a baptism opportunity. Sometimes the padrinos have to escape running and just toss the money to the crowd. Tonchi still has the 50 centavos piece that she got at a baptism when she was in summer school in Guadalajara.)

(**Note: In one sense, you might say it means "co-parents", but "compadre" and "comadre" can’t be translated into English to adequately describe the special relationship between the birth parents and the godparents.)

"The truth is that we are very happy that they are going to be the godparents at the baptism of our sons, since Thalia and Tommy are people that we love very much, the same as her mother and her sisters. We feel as if we were one of the family," stated Itatí. "And it is difficult to choose godparents, because this deals with your children and it is a very great responsibility, but I feel that definitely we will make good compadres," she added.

(Note: The primary purpose of having godparents for children to be baptized is not so that there would be somebody to take them in and support them in case something happened to the birth parents. It is supposed to be a couple chosen by the parents to ensure that the children receive the proper spiritual upbringing and guidance in the Catholic Church. Thus, it is rather a novelty that Itatí and Eduardo are awarding this responsibility to a couple who has actually LEFT the Catholic church. It appears to be a social issue to them rather than a religious one in this case.)

Eduardo explained that the relationship with Thalia had its roots in the time that Itatí and she acted together in the telenovela María la del Barrio. "There the friendship was born and actually I never had the opportunity to work with Thalia. I only said "hi" and "bye" when we happened to see each other in the Televisa studios. We get together more often when she comes to Mexico, we go out to eat, we go to dinner, or some gathering among friends. Besides, we get along marvelously with her mother, Yolanda, and her sisters," he said.

While the date for the baptism of their twins is approaching, Itatí and Eduardo are preparing themselves to rejoin the cast of the musical spectacular Aventurera, at the invitation of the bridesmaid at their wedding and the producer of the show, Carmen Salinas.

Itatí speaks about her future comadre: "A very lovely friendship sprang up between us when we worked on the telenovela María la del Barrio. Afterwards we stopped seeing each other as often due to the rhythm of our careers, but since I got married the friendship began to be resurrected. I got pregnant, the children were born, and we have seen each other a lot and we have a very beautiful relationship. And the business about being godmother came up at a party where we began joking, telling each other 'Of course, Comadre’, comadre here, comadre there, and stuff like that."

A Night of Glamour and Recognition

During a night of glittering stars and drop-dead revealing designer gowns, there was still time for poking good-natured fun at the favorites.  Here is "Cachita" of El Gordo y La Flaca, arriving in a limosine dressed as Thalia on the way to her wedding.  Predictably, "Cachita" tripped over her massive train and fell (this is her trademark act, similar to Chevy Chase falling off the stage on Saturday Night Live).

Cachita ala Thalia

Cachita spoofs Thalia

Then, finally, the "real thing" arrived.  Lovely Thalia arrived without her husband, gracious and smiling for her many fans who lined the drive, waving and screaming her name.

All Hail the Queen of Latin Pop !!!

Posing for the cameras

A beauty that never fades, even with windblown hair...

Looking ever so punk and oozing attitude and animal magnatism, Thalia showed the world the real meaning of her hit, Arrasando, in the best dance version that we have seen from her so far. Barely catching her breath from the super energetic number, Thalia got the surprise of her life as her name was announced the winner of the Premio del Publico award.

Are they sure I won?
I won ???

I can't believe it !!!!
Muchas Gracias !!!

Why Paulina won and Thalía didn't

An editorial by The Ankh Chronicle Staff
Source: Premio Lo Nuestro, Univision, broadcast February 8, 2001

Obviously, Thalía fans are not exactly delighted with the final results of the Premio Lo Nuestro awards. First, our diva was shut out of the nominations for several categories where we believe she was more than deserving, and then to add insult to injury, after Thalía's fantastic performance of the title song from the album which was in the finalists for "Album of the Year", the award instead goes to Paulina Rubio. But there is a peculiar logic to what happened, and there was no conspiracy to "rob" Thalía of anything she had coming to her.

Beyond the fact that the presenters could have tied a string around Paulina's ankle and flown her to the stage (she was that "high", interpret that however you want to), Paulina is not a very likable person. We will not use the words which are most commonly applied to her, after seeing what she was wearing as she stumbled her way to the stage at Lo Nuestro you probably have some new words of your own. Telling interviewers about how one of her favorite authors is Neitzche has got to be a joke, right? I doubt that many of us would take her home and introduce her to Mom.

Paulina accepts her award

Premio Popular Awardee Thalia

But there is one indisputable fact: Paulina worked her frequently exposed little butt off and deserves that award. Her album DID outsell Arrasando, whether we like it or not, and it also stayed on the charts in Latin America far longer. Several songs on that album remain the most requested ever, and she released the videos IMMEDIATELY and got a lot of coverage by going to every single show in every single country as many times as they would have her. She never said no to any interview, any appearance, or any request for photos. She was, as they say in Mexico, "hasta en la sopa", which means you saw her everywhere no matter where you turned. Of course, you and I don't WANT to see her anywhere, but that is beside the point. The name of the game is promotion, and we do not have to go into the differences in how Thalía's management handles her in that area.

Another fact that is being totally overlooked by Thalía fans on the internet is that Univision, the sponsor of these prizes, is located ONLY IN THE U.S.A. and that is their audience unless they sell a program for broadcast in Mexico or some other Spanish-speaking country. And if you live in the US, you know very well that audience is heavily weighted toward Mexican immigrants and their families who like the things which were popular in the rural areas where they originated. Yes, there are a lot of very wealthy show business types who have flocked to Miami, LA, and New York, but the great majority of music sold in the US is norteño, banda, mariachi, and that sort of stuff. That is why Premio Lo Nuestro had to add all those categories with groups that look just alike spread out across the stage and sound just alike (to us) -- because that is where the money is in the area covered by Univision, and it can't be ignored. And that is why there were 3 hours of total boredom (to us) capped off by Thalía's best performance ever.

Fans are also overlooking how the winners were chosen. We have published the entire rule book before and commented on it several times since, so forget the idea that Thalía was "robbed" of anything. We may not like the results, but the winners were already chosen by the US radio broadcasters in advance and were known when the show was scheduled, except for the PREMIO POPULAR, where Thalía fans worldwide united in an unprecedented effort to put her on top where she belongs. If a sound tech, having been told that Paulina was the winner of the final award, got confused and started that tape when Thalía was announced for that category, it was not the worst backstage mistake of the evening, believe it.

And if it is your party, you can make the rules, and those are the rules Univision abided by. We don't like the results, but under the rules that was the outcome and there was no hidden agenda. It is obvious to all of us that Univision considers Thalía one of its special favorites, we can never claim that they do not want to give her the world at her feet. Maybe this will be a wake-up call which will benefit all of Thalía's fans, so that we will see her coming back next year, stronger than ever, to make Paulina eat her words.

The night belongs to Thalia!

TW Correspondent: Chad
Source: Preio Lo Nuestro on Univision

Although the Queen of Latin-Pop didn't take home Premio Popular or Album of the Year, Thalia did manage to bring the crowd to their feet and win Premio del Pueblo.

Thalia showed up wearing an elegant ensemble, which was a beautiful form fitting beaded chiffon gown.  Still, the question arose when Raul Molina of El Gorda y La Flaca asked if the pregnancy rumor was true.  Thalia, flirting with the camera asked him to pull out and get a shot of her.  "Do I look pregnant to you", she said.

The rest of the night Thalia sat in the front row which is always reserved for artists with the most amount of star power and glamour.  Sitting close by were other great performers such as Celia Cruz, Chayanne, Carlos Vives, and let's not forget Paulina Rubio who was seated just feet away from her.  The rivalry between the two didn't seem to exist last night unless you count the fact that Paulina took the album of the year home.

But even though Thalia didn't manage to snag album of the year she had a performance that was truly out of this world.   With her hair blowing in the wind, black leather pants with diamond beads, diamond beaded top, about a dozen or two dancers, and a set that looked straight out of the video, Thalia brought the crowd to their feet with a performance of ARRASANDO.  This must of been a hard thing for Thalia do do, because after sitting there for 3 1/2 hours the audience only had gotten up one other time to applaud Chayanne for his committment and ability to be a role model to youth.

It's amazing that each perfromance of Arrasando get's even better than the last. And that was certainly true at the Premios.  High energy, high sprited, and amazing are the words that can be used to describe her performance.  This showed as Thalia was leaving and gave her dancer's high fives and let out sounds that were obviously excitment.

In a very rare candid moment, Thalia broke into a dance with the lead Singer from AZUL AZUL, in their performance of LA BOMBA.  The lead singer went right to the front row and grabbed her hand obviously asking her to stand up and dance.  She obliged by dancing candidly and having fun, before she sat down and motioned back to him to give the moment back to him.  And she was wearing a different dress.  How she changed how she danced in those heels will forever be a mystery since she came in in a comeplete different dress.

Finally right after her performance they announced the winner of Premio del Pueblo and said her name, but in an error they started playing the song from Paulina Rubio, Thalia looked unsure if she won or not because of the confusion at first.  But, they straightened it out and played Arrasando as Thalia began to accept her award.

That was the last that the camera was there to capture Thalia, for the remaining minutes of the show she was still back stage after accepting her award and still gettign her breath back from her performance, when they announced the winner of Album of the Year.

Even though Thalia didn't take home all the awards she might of wanted it was obvious that she did own the night with her performance.  She gave so much excitment in the otherwise drab, long, and ever-lasting award show that ran 4 1/2 hours with the pre-show included.  A standing ovation from this crowd was a monument!  But Thalia never fails to deliver in her performance!

Thalia Wins Hearts at Premio Lo Nuestro

TW Correspondent: Ed Grant

With her hair dramatically blowing in the wind, Thalia brought the audience to its feet at the "Premios Lo Nuestro" ceremony tonight with the rousing choreography for her hit "Arrasando."  Wearing platform shoes, a thin spangled top, and fashionably grungy pants, Thalia led her dancers in a routine that received a standing ovation from the star-studded crowd. As the recording of the song ended (you didn't think she could sing those rapid-fire lyrics and dance like a demon at the same time, did you?), she expressed pleasure at the audience's reaction, high-fiving the dancers and giving one of her trademark beaming smiles.

The song was a scheduled event, but the big surprise came next for Our Girl--she won the "Premio del Publico"! Thalia seemed genuinely surprised--she even studied the card to make sure it had her name on it. After giving out one of her girlish squeals (another adorable trademark), she thanked her public and reflected that this year marks her 20th in show business. She went on to thank the people who matter most to her: her deceased father, Jesus, her mom, sisters, and (in a high, cute voice) "mi novio qui esta en casa" or in English; "My boyfriend who is at home" (though Thalia had been prominently seated in the front row of the auditorium all night, near honored award-winner Chayanne, her husband did not attend the ceremony with her). At this point, presenter Carlos Benevides cut her "thank-yous" short to lead a rousing high-school-like cheer for the smiling Ms. Sodi. Despite this amusing interlude, Our Girl wasn't distracted--she went on to praise Latins everywhere, her beloved "pais," and--most surprisingly for those of us male fans watching--her "novios" who continue to follow her career. She reminded us all that she's now a married woman, but said that "looking" is still okay! On that wild and unexpected note, Our Girl left the stage. Despite the fact that the following award, Pop Album of the Year (the show's final presentation) was won by old Timbiriche colleague (and rival) Paulina Rubio, Thalia scored another grand victory with this "Premio," another proof of the public's unabashed affection for her.

Church says "No" to Thalía

TV y Novelas claims that they have another "exclusive" interview with Thalia, and it will be published in the latest issue, due on the newsstands today. The entire cover has pictures of Thalia, so it will be easy for you to find. We will report in detail on the interview inside as soon as we can obtain a copy. But the bombshell from TV y Novelas was dropped during the morning show at Univision, Despierta America.

According to them, the Catholic Church has denied Thalia permission for a second and third wedding. The position of the Church is that she already had the sacrament of matrimony performed, and you only take it once, even if it is with the same spouse. Therefore, Thalia has been forced to forget any plans to have traveling weddings in Mexico and Miami as a follow-up to the ceremony in New York last December.

However, according to the spokesman from TV y Novelas, Thalia will instead consider a "Mass of Thanksgiving" at those places instead. Until we see the article, we can't tell you whether she will serve at the mass wearing one of the other wardrobe of wedding dresses designed by Mitzy for the occasion.

(Note: Again we see in action the same "rules" of the Church being applied to a situation for the convenience of the participants. Thalia is not even Catholic anymore, and it was reported that she did not even cross herself when inside St. Patricks Cathedral. And yet, the Catholic Church does not recognize the fact of her departure, just like it ignored Tommy's conversion to Judaism.

The only way we can explain this situation to those of you who have asked how this can happen is to say that if you are baptized and accepted into the Catholic Church, you are a Catholic forever, at least until the Church say you aren't. One of the most common ways to get yourself excommunicated is to divorce your Catholic spouse, but neither Thalia or Tommy have done that, So it appears that you can marry in multiple faiths and even convert to all of them, and the Church ignores it. In other words, your deviations are what is "invalid" to them, not any ceremonies you want performed within Catholicism. We don't know if this adequately explains to you fans holding other faiths, but suffice it to say that if Thalia and Tommy ever get divorced now, the Church will definitely have something to say about it.)

In a "collector's item" special for the Thalia fan, Thalia Arrasando aired at 10/9am CTS Friday February 2nd on Univision.  The special took the audience on a fantastic journey through Thalia's long career in music as well as telenovelas, but giving special attention to Thalia's latest prodigy Arrasando.

Feel the music (19)

The journey included four performances of songs from Thalia's Arrasando album.  The songs were Siempre Hay Cariño, Reéncarnacion, Regresa Mi, an mtv of Entre El Mar Y Una Etrella , and the blockbuster performance of Arrasando.  The performances looked like they were spliced in from a previous show, but they were still great performances that emphasized Thalia's unique blend of music, style, and rapport with the audience.

Each song performed was a high energy performance, but Arrasando seemed to be the highlight of her performances which really showed when Thalia walked up to the audience and people seemed to almost trample each other in the stands to try and get close enough touch Thalia or get a handshake from her. The rendition she performed seemed much higher in enthusiasm and spirit than I have seen in any of her past performances.  This one was truly the leader of the pack.

The journey was not just about Arrasando.  The audience was treated to clips that highlighted the Queen of Telenovelas career on the screen and behind the mike.  From La Pobre Senorita Limantour, where Thalia made her debut in Telenovelas to Rosalinda, the journey included clips from each of her Telenovelas that have been seen by millions in hundreds of countries around the world.

Also on the fantastic journey was clips from her self-titled album which was released when Thalia embarked on her solo career when she left the group Timbiriche all the way to the newest album Arrasando, again the audience was treated to short clips from every album and many performances.  And finally leading up to her pride and joy Arrasando, which Thalia says is her best work to date.

"I think this was a great opportunity for me creatively, because it's the millenium and I was able to be more personal and it was something new," Thalia said.

Other highlights included clips when she was Queen of Carnaval, when she recieved a star on Calle Ocho, to her performance with the one and only Julio Iglesias, Grease, and finally her marriage to Tommy Mottola last December.

At the end there is an impression that Thalia has achieved so much in her professional career and you wonder what is next for the Queen of Telenovelas and Latin Pop. Only time will tell, but for now Thalia is enjoying topping the  charts and her fans are enjoying the intoxicating rythm of ARRASANDO!!

NOTE: Due to a comment in the narrative of this special, about Thalia having "committed to joining her life with him", we see that it was filmed and originally broadcast in November of last year at the latest. Because as everybody knows now, Thalia and Tommy Mottola were married in New York City on December 2, 2000.
