Thalia has a message for her fans and the world regarding the events of September 11, 2001. You may read it here.

Latin Grammy Has Been Cancelled !

Source: latingrammys.com
TW Correspondent: Chad

The word is official now, from Michael Greene himself.  There will be no Latin Grammy's live telvision special this year. The Latin Recording Academy is still in discussion as to what the most tasteful way would be to give the artists their rewards that they are so entitled to.  But, one thing is for sure there will be no live performance of any kind televising the Latin Grammy's.  And unfortunately, this also includes no live performance of our beloved Thalia.

Due to the tragic events that have befallen the United States and the world, they have cancelled the event completely.  The Latin Grammy's were to air live the same day that the United States suffered it's worse attack in history.

The Latin Grammy's event which had been in preparations for a year is apparently such a huge project that they couldn't get all the details worked out again for another show of this magnitude.  Especially after they moved the event from it's first location from Miami to Los Angeles less than 2 weeks from the air date.

This show would have been Thalia's first appearance and performance in the United States on a major english network.  The performance which many believe would of catapulted Thalia into megastardom in the United States would also have had a prime time audience.

Unfortunately, the attack claimed one more victim by cancelling the show. The old saying goes "The show must go on ".  Apparently not this time.

Michael Greene's Statement follows:

RECORDING ACADEMY AND LATIN RECORDING ACADEMY OFFICIALLY CANCEL 2ND ANNUAL
LATIN GRAMMY AWARDS SHOW

(Statement by Michael Greene, President/CEO, The Recording Academy and the Latin Recording Academy, Released Friday, September 21, 2001)

"The Recording Academy and Latin Recording Academy, after careful consideration and days of deliberations with our strategic partners CBS, Cossette Productions, venue operators, music directors, talent and travel coordinators, security specialists and everyone else involved in producing the 2nd Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards telecast regrettably must report that it is simply not practical nor advisable to attempt to reschedule a live, international event of this magnitude. We at the Academies are all emotionally devastated, as is everyone, and are working as an organization to help deliver money, counseling and other human services to those who have been most directly affected by these emotionally debilitating, world altering events. We are also very disappointed that we will not be able to give this year's deserving nominees their chance to show the world what we already know about them that they are world-class musical artists. We currently are determining the most meaningful and elegant way to award the winners their Latin GRAMMYs and will be making an announcement regarding this very soon. We appreciate everyone's patience and support through this very difficult time."

President/CEO, The Recording Academy and the Latin Recording Academy

"The Grammy is the least important…."

The terrorist attempts that forever marked the history of the United Stated cut off the celebration of the Latin Grammys, whose second presentation was going to be held the same night and for which they had already rehearsed. Now all is suspended and the nominated artists do not have words to express their sadness before this horror.

Artists such as Luis Miguel, Thalía, Juanes, Vicente and Alejandro Fernández, and Carlos Santana had already rehearsed for the ceremony. Among the presenters were figures such as Marc Anthony, Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, Jimmy Smits, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and trumpet player Arturo Sandoval. The ceremony was a production costing $4 Million and would have been transmitted to the entire United States and another 120 countries. Last year it was seen by 7.5 million television viewers.

For the most part, the artists remained in Los Angeles, restricted by the closing of all airports in the country. However, some of them crossed the border by land, heading toward Mexico. All were greatly affected. Luis Miguel, who has a house in the city, closed himself up there and does not even consider flying in an airplane, at least for a few days. (Note: Thalía owns a house in nearby Palos Verdes, but it is said that she is in one of the hotels instead, together with her husband and her mother.)

The possibility has been mentioned to hold the ceremony within 3 weeks or a month, according to Enrique Fernández, top executive of LARAS, but there is nothing definite. The National Academy Recording Arts and Science (NARAS) released a terse statement on Tuesday in which it told of the cancellation of the event.

"This is enough to make you cry," was the first thing that Juanes said to Univision.com. "What I feel doesn't even have anything to do with the Grammy, it is the least important thing," stated the Colombian rock singer, nominated for 7 awards.

The person in charge of public relations for composer Kike Santander, Diana Montoya, explained that Kike no longer wants to speak with anybody, that his reaction was great sadness. "We don't know what to do," she said to Univision.com. "Before a tragedy of this magnitude, the Grammy and other things lose importance."

Comparisons are odious, but already several reporters have asked Juanes how he saw this, coming from a country so violent. He answered us: "Colombia is a beautiful place. There is violence like in New York and in whatever place in the world. Do you realize that it can also happen here and now Colombia seems safer?"

"I can't believe it, it's so unusual, it is one of the most terrible things that I have seen in my life, it's a crime," stated Chucho Valdés, the Cuban musician nominated in two categories, who also said he was "very sad" and he had not been able to leave his hotel room.

The controversy that resulted in moving the ceremony from Miami to Los Angeles had to do with the presence of Cuban musicians from the island, such as Valdés, but for him there are no differences in a moment like this: "Now the world is simply one sole thing. You have to fight for goodness and truth, you have to see how to save people. The pain is very great."

Homage to Julio Iglesas is the only Latin Grammy event held

Thalía, Carlos Ponce, Celia Cruz, Laura Pausini, and Jon Secada recorded a tribute to Julio Iglesias on the Monday before the Latin Grammy broadcast was scheduled. The homage for "Man of the Year" was rendered to the Spanish singer by LARAS for his career achievements, and was intended to be transmitted at the ending of the awards ceremony. Now, these images are all that we have of what was intended to be a night of recognition and celebration for Latin music.

At the beginning of the special program which was held on Monday afternoon in the Beverly Hilton hotel, located in Beverly Hills, Thalia arrived with a fur overcoat, without placing any significance on the high temperatures that the city was experiencing. And in order to not have to make any statements, the singer, who arrived accompanied by her mother, asked the organizers of the event to take the reporters to an area where they could not see her.

In contrast, Laura Pausini agreed to the interviewers and said that her chances of carrying away the prize for Best Pop Album by a Female Singer were considerably reduced since she was competing with Thalía, Paulina Rubio, Christina Aguilera, and Natalia Oreiro. More than her declarations, Pausini surprised the media with her new look: now she displays very short hair.

The organizers of the Grammys also confirmed that Carlos Ponce, Celia Cruz, and Thalía will be in charge of interpreting songs which were made famous in Iglesia's voice, and that on this occasion it would be the Puerto Rican (Ponce) who would be presenting "Hey".

They stated that the homage, which last year was rendered to producer Emilio Estefan, would have a duration of two hours and that they would have loved to have Luis Miguel also participate, but instead it will fall to him to close the awards ceremony. "It is not that we have not invited Luis Miguel, what is happening is that he will be closing the festival, he will sing one single song at about 11:00 pm," said informants.

The show must stop

The entertainment industry in the United States was also a "victim" of the terrorist acts perpetrated in New York and Washington. Since notice of the attacks was broadcast, events in the entertainment world scheduled for Tuesday and the following days were suspended as a preventative security measure and in order to show solidarity with the mourning which envelopes the American Union.

The first event to feel the impact of events was the highly-anticipated celebration of the Latin Grammys, which would have been held on Tuesday in the Great Western Forum at Inglewood in Los Angeles. Several of the guests and nominees were already gathering, such as Thalía, Luis Miguel, Alejandro Sanz, Paulina Rubio, Los Tigres del Norte, Alejandro and Vicente Fernández.

The Academy officially stated that the event was definitely cancelled and that the ceremony would not be rescheduled.

"It's over. That is, it's cancelled," the spokesperson for the show, Barb Deeghan, told the Associated Press news agency.

16 Septiembre celebrations are cancelled

In a very significant gesture of solidarity with the US, Mexican President Vicente Fox has announced that all the patriotic festivals of September 16th which were to be held by the embassies and consulates of that country in US territory are cancelled in order to unite the Mexican people in the United States with the pain provoked by the tragedies in New York and Washington. Mexican nationals are also being encouraged to fly little US flags together with the Mexican flags on their car antennas this weekend.

The Latin Grammys only got as far as the rehersals

Paulina Rubio, Alejandro Sanz, Thalía, Luis Miguel, and Alejandro Fernández and his father Vicente were only some of the artists who had prepared for their appearances with surprises included for the night of the Latin Grammys. But the biggest surprise of all was the cancellation of the show and the events which led to that action.

Artists such as Christina Aguilera, Thalía, and Marc Anthony, had a full rehearsal the day before. The rehearsals had been maintained in secret, since most of the participants in the show wanted to surprise the audience with their numbers and did not want anybody to find out ahead of time what they were going to present.

The nominees for the second awarding of the Latin Grammy celebrated the night before in the salons of the Beverly Hilton hotel. However, given the critical situation due to recent terrorist attacks in the country, this time that was going to be all that was seen because after the rehearsals there was a new advisory.

Thalía, Alejandro Sanz, Paulina Rubio, Laura Pausini, Pedro Fernández, Alejandro Fernández, Jon Secada, Celia Cruz, Los Tigres del Norte, Julieta Venegas, Aterciopelados, and Carlos Ponce were some of the artists who attended the events the night before the Grammys were scheduled. Julio Iglesias, on his part, was named "Man of the Year" by the Academy, a recognition that he accepted with pleasure.

"I don't know if I deserve it, but I appreciate the homage," Julio commented. "It is a pleasure to be with all the Grammy nominees tonight, with so much talent."

Prior to the dinner/gala, all the nominees spoke with the press in the hotel lobby, as well as greeting others whom they met on the way. For example, while Alejandro Sanz was giving an interview to a North American channel, beside him was Paulina Rubio, who, upon recognizing him, immediately hugged him in greeting.

Paulina, whose most recent album, Paulina, is nominated in the category of "Best Pop Album by a Female Singer" and also "Best Song", declared that if she does not carry away the Grammy it does not matter, since it is good to compete. "I love just being here, whether in Miami or Los Angeles. The Grammys are going to be great," she stated. "We are very happy because ther are 10 million Mexicans here, I feel more at home, but it also affects me because I have a house in Miami."

Thalía arrived at the event accompanied by her publicists and her mother. Tommy Mottola stayed in the hotel.

"I am very content to be nominated, I am happy to be able to sing and to place my music in these Latin Grammys. I hope it reaches every corner of the planet. Having two nominations and to be singing is to win," said Thalía. "I already won."

Asked what her audience could expect from her performance on Grammy night, Thalia said: "Surprises, you will see. We have a little surprise prepared with great affection and love for the entire public, because I come representing the Latin race and especially my Mexico, with all the passion in this event which is so big."

The majority of the nominees were in agreement in stating that the act of changing the location from Miami to Los Angeles did not diminish the Grammys in any aspect, since they were all there to celebrate. And so they did. The nominees were at the event for Julio Iglesias, but afterwards each one of them left for other parts of the city to continue with the party.

Thalía has more offers coming in

Thalia sings a Julio Iglesias original Monterrey, México.- The sound of techno-cumbia might find a worthy successor if Thalía reaches an agreement with A.B. Quintanilla to record a song with the style which characterized the music of the late singer Selena.

The night before the terrorist attack that paralyzed the United States on Tuesday, the Tex-Mex composer and the interpreter of "Arrasando" met at the homage to Julio Iglesias which the directors of the Latin Grammys had organized, where they held talks in which they came to an agreement to work together on the singer's next material.

"Yesterday we went to the dinner for Julio Iglesias and everybody was there. It was like a tribute where there were many important artists. I have plans to do something with Thalía and we spoke last night (Monday), and yes, we see the opportunity to do something with her," said the Texan producer.

The also telenovela actress agreed with Quintanilla that, after finishing with the promotion of her record of hits in Banda rhythm which has just been launched on the market, they will meet again in order to record some song which he will write.

Thalia arrives for the tribute party

Is Tommy Mottola actually singing along with Thalia, Julio and other performers?

During the event, Quintanilla broke bread with Alejandro Sanz, Paulina Rubio, Carlos Ponce, and Celia Cruz, among other luminaries, on a musical night among friends that they all enjoyed to the maximum. After the late evening that he experienced from participating in the homage to Iglesias, the founder of the group Kumbia Kings had a hard awaking on Tuesday morning when he found out about the terrorist attack on the twin towers in New York.

Dismayed by what had happened, Quintanilla related that he was staying together with his members of the Kumbia Kings and other gruperos, when they were evacuated from the hotel in which they were staying, near the airport. "It's a tragedy, I can't explain with words what I feel right now. If only this does not provoke a war or something. It is very sad what happened," he expressed. "They called us that morning to let us know about the cancellation of the Grammys and we saw it on television. It's better, because it put a lot of people in danger. There were many people who wanted to leave, but they couldn't because everything was closed."

After being advised of the cancellation of the event, Quintanilla and his group decided to get out of Los Angeles, faced with the fear of an attack such as those which happened in other North American cities. So together with the Guardianes del Amor and their manager, Óscar Flores, they got on the bus that transported them around the city and decided to return to the border with their country.

"There was a lot of hysteria because they did not know if something would happen in Los Angeles also, because of it being a large city. For this reason it's better for us to return," stated Quintanilla.

The FBI ordered suspension of the Latin Grammy awards

Los Angeles, US - The second awarding of the Latin Grammy prizes was suspended under orders from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), facing the possibility of terrorists acts such as occurred this Tuesday in New York, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania.

According to local radio stations in LA, the FBI prohibited any public performance in the city since they feared for the safety of Californians. The FBI asked that all schools be closed, along with malls and public places where a large quantity of people might be gathered.

(NOTE: There is no intention to reschedule the Grammy event at this point. Considering that the winners were already known to the producers of the ceremony, we are wondering what they will do with this information. The chance of keeping it "under wraps" indefinitely is impossible.)

Thalia during the Latin Grammy Dress Rehearsal

(Note: After this news was posted on the Grammy.com site they made the following announcement and cancelled the ceremonies.)

STATEMENT FROM THE RECORDING ACADEMY AND CBS:

"Due to the unimaginable events that have occurred this morning, The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, The Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences and CBS have canceled tonight's 2nd Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards show and all related activities. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, their families and everyone who has been impacted by these horrific events."

Tommy Mottola, standing next to wife Thalía onstage at the Forum rehearsals for tomorrow's 2nd Annual Latin GRAMMYs, was pointing to his almost-finished lollypop. "I need some more, quick," the Chairman/CEO of Sony Music Entertainment said. The moment could not have been sweeter. In fact, everyone was sucking on them — Mottola, Thalía and her mother, even some band members. Eventually, those present started looking around in order not to be left out from the candy giveaway.

Maybe it was the sugar rush that picked Thalía up after she lost balance during her first run-through of "Arrasando," the song she will perform during the Latin GRAMMY telecast (the Arrasando album is up for the Best Female Pop Vocal Album award). Wearing high heels and tight jeans, she ended up in a squatting position, looking at her surprised mother, who nevertheless relaxed when Thalía, with the wink of an eye, let Mom know everything was okay. She got up, laughed at herself for a few seconds, counted to three, and turned into Barbie, Rocker and flamenco diva all rolled into one. It was an energy that reminded us of Shakira's show-stopping performance last year, flames included.

"That's my daughter," Doña Yolanda said. "See how quick she got up? She's an actress, she feels the songs like no one else." Then she gave thumbs up to her daughter, who acknowledged her with a loud "Mi mami …!," [My mom!].

Tony Estrada and Luis Barboza didn't have any lollypops, but they still had a sweet taste in their mouths. As members of local rock en español band Voz D' Mano, one of the best bands in Los Angeles some say, they never thought they would be playing with Thalía at the Latin GRAMMYs. "At the Universal Amphitheatre [where the band played at the Watcha Tour] somebody told us Thalía needed two guitarists," Estrada said, "and we immediately took the gig. I don't care what the rockeros say … This is first-class pop, the sound is great, and we're having a wonderful time."

On the road to the Grammy

In a survey conducted by a Mexico City newspaper, Thalía out-polled all the other female candidates, specifically Paulina Rubio, in several categories.

In the category of "Who do you think most deserves the Grammy?", Thalía obtained support of 55%, with Paulina right behind her with admirers totaling more than a third of those interviewed. In the category of "Best Female Pop Album", Arrasando also received the highest scores among those surveyed, competing with Paulina, Christina Aguilera, Laura Pausini, and Natalia Oreiro. Paulina's album got a preference of 21% in her favor this time. Thalia deserves the Grammy
Most successful mexican entertainer internationally? According to the survey, Thalía is considered the most successful on an international level, and 53% of those interviewed had the opinion that she sings better than Paulina Rubio, who got the vote of 28% of those in the Mexican capitol.
8 out of 10 residing in the capitol consider Thalía more attractive than Paulina, and 72% believe that Tommy Mottola can influence the outcome of the Grammy voting so that his wife will be the winner. Will Tommy influence the voting board?

How was the survey conducted? It was conducted by the Investigative Department of REFORMA, the Mexico City newspaper, done by telephone in the capitol on September 6th, 2001. There were 403 actual respondents, who had to be more than 15 years old, with the average age of those surveyed turning out to be 35. (Of course, you could not be surveyed if there was no telephone in your home.) The margin of error is plus or minus 5 percentage points with a level of confidence of 95% that these numbers reflect an accurate distribution of the general public's opinions at this time.

Does this survey in any way affect or reflect voting for the Latin Grammys? No, not at all, because winners (and for that matter, the nominees) are chosen by the Latin Recording Academy. Here is how that body is described on Grammy.com:

"Established in 1997, after 10 years in development, the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc. (the Latin Recording Academy), is the first international corporation formed by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc. It is a membership-based association composed of musicians, producers, engineers and other creative and technical recording professionals who are dedicated to improving the quality of life and the cultural condition for Latin music and its makers. With offices in Miami and Santa Monica, the members include music professionals in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking communities from around the world.

The Latin GRAMMY Awards recognize artistic and/or technical achievement, not sales figures or chart positions, with the winners determined by the votes of their peers – the qualified voting members of the Latin Academy. The chief goal of the Latin GRAMMY Awards is to recognize excellence and create a greater public awareness of the cultural diversity and contributions of Latin recording artists, both Stateside and internationally. The Latin Grammy nominees and winners are chosen via the same exacting process as the Grammy Awards."

In other words, the process is highly political, and it is well known that members from different countries strictly promote their own artists, a nationalistic bias. This is how Juanes, a singer never heard of by the majority Latin music fans, obtained that incredible number of nominations - in his country, Colombia, membership has soared and the turnout of votes there is a priority for them (information from Vista, the Hispanic newspaper Supplement in the US). Due to their position in promotion and directing the careers of so many Latin artists for many years, Emilio Estefan and Tommy Mottola are also perceived as also having undue influence in determining the winners.

Latin Grammy Awards Nominees 2001
Nominees for the Latin Grammys pose at the presentation ceremony surrounding Juanes ("Juanes, who?"), the one in the purple shirt.
The 2nd Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards will take place at The Forum, Los Angeles, CA on Tuesday night, September 11, 2001, and will be broadcast live by CBS, at 9:00 pm ET/PT. Hopefully they will have a Red Carpet interview segment a few hours before the show, and of course we are all anxiously waiting to see what magnificent performance Thalía will be presenting (hopefully singing live) for her first US television appearance.

Carla Estrada wants to proceed with "Cecelia Valdez"

Monterrey, México.- She has barely started up filming on "The Spring" and Carla Estrada is already thinking about her next project, in which she wants Thalía to star in a story written especially for her. The producer has the last telenovela written by René Muñoz while he was still living and she states that the late actor was inspired by the interpreter of "Amor a la Mexicana" to create this new story.

"The truth is that Thalia and I had spoken about this for many years and in effect we began to work together on a telenovela to be called "Cecilia Valdez". Well, I really hope it can happen, although this project will probably be next year, because right now she has many commitments," said Carla.

Will Thalia make Cecilia Valdez with her?

The maker of "Quinceañera", the first telenovela in which Thalia worked with her, commented that the plot that she has is very lovely. "I didn't lose the opportunity of speaking with her now that she arrived in Mexico, because Rene wrote 90 episodes for her and the project is very interesting," she added.

Carla, who like the majority of producers has her own group of actors with which she identifies, such as Lucero and Adela Noriega, with whom she has worked on several telenovelas, explained that she made only "Quinceañera" with Thalia because they had not succeeded in coordinating their schedules.

"I have had the intention of working with her for a long time, but she has not been able to commit due to one thing or another, so it has been postponed. But I really hope that it is going to be done next year."

Although upon her arrival in Mexico Thalia also received offers from other producers, such as Valentín Pímstein (MariMar) and Salvador Mejía (Rosalinda), Carla does not fear the competition.

"I believe that in this case we are dealing with a project in which the actor has to share with you, you with the writers and the writers with the actor, and where the best communion is being given, well there is where she is going to be."

Nevertheless, Carla is enthusiastic about realizing her project with Thalia because for her it is very special that the late actor had thought of her for this production. (Note: More than that, it was said back in 1998 that she had personally been working with him on this script and many in the industry assumed Thalia would go ahead with Cecilia at that time; instead Rene died and Thalia chose Rosalinda.) But while things are being worked out, the producer feels very happy with the filming of "The Spring", in which she is working with Adela Noriega and Mauricio Islas in the starring roles.

"Fortunately, the pace of the work is going very well. I love the chemistry that Mauricio and Adela have. I really hope that the audience likes what we are making."

She explained that the story will continue to present some surprises as it goes on developing, and besides the actors are very suited to their parts. "But really, we have barely been filming on location for a month and we still need all the scenes in the studio, so it has a long way to go," commented the producer.

Will she suceed with her new Grupera image? Will the music genre embrace her?

A grupera from Manhattan

That afternoon in New York everything was as usual. The people moved more rapidly than the cars and the traffic jam of taxis, limousines, and anonymous autos produced the same long faces inside of them as every day. Well, in all except one, because in one of those autos a song was being born. "The Corrido of Cuco Peña" to be exact, and two Mexican sisters were writing it, Federica and Thalia Sodi.

"We wrote it on a slip of paper that Federica found in her wallet," Explains Thalia, lying on a white bed in a suite of the Hotel Bentley in South Beach, at 6:00 in the afternoon, after an entire day of interviews. "We wrote it on a receipt from a drug store. And in the middle of that traffic jam, Federica and I were falling on the floor with laughter about the story of Cuco Peña, who, of course, is not the Mexican artist but someone else, one who is anonymous." (Note: Thalia said in another interview that she liked the way the name of a Mexican artist sounded, we believe he is a song writer, and so she "swiped" it for her protagonist's name.)

Anonymous until August 26th, Thalia's birthday, when Thalia Con Banda, the record which this woman without cellulite and with a brain is giving as a gift to her Mexico, goes on sale and she launches it, if all goes as planned, with a great big party in the Zócolo of her city. (Of course, it didn't happen that way. Another example of journalistic deadlines being met way ahead of the date an event is supposed to take place, because as we all know the concert plans have completely changed.)

That Tuesday in Miami the sun did not come out, but Thalia had reserves enough in her body. From up close she is just as pretty as in photos. Soft makeup, tanned skin, and not as tall as she looks when she cruises the red carpets like a diva. She speaks slowly, thinking. She pays attention to the questions and appears sincere in the answers. One whole day dedicated to the promotion of Thalia Con Banda has put her face to face with a different journalist every fifteen minutes. A weariness which is not obvious makes her keep stretching out on the bed until she remains lying over a pillow in which half of her pretty child's face is lost.

"I don't forget the journalists' faces," she confesses to me. "After these long hours of interviews, my record company sends me all that gets published, I leaf through it and I make my list of who I wasted my time on. Here I realize who made me talk about my career for an hour only to publish one sentence of yellow journalism."

In these last months, that color was being repeated in the headlines. That if Mariah Carey, the ex-wife of her husband, said that she did not know Thalia was a singer…That if Thalia does not wear panties and a tear revealed it….That if Thalia made fun of Salma in the door of Itatí Cantoral's house…And without moving even one muscle of the half face that I manage to see, she goes on explaining how legends feel about gossip.

"Look, I am so accustomed to that type of stuff that it now makes me laugh. I can't believe that business about the little hole…My pants tore while I was singing at the Billboard Awards, but I definitely had panties. What do I think about it? Everything that comes out concerning me is sick. There are many artists who go out more naked and they don't make such a big deal." (Note: To let you know just how far this issue got carried, a representative of Mira! (the Spanish-language National Inquirer) appeared on El Gordo y La Flaca and assured the viewers that they had taken a tape of the split in Thalia's pants and paid to have a CIA-level photo lab analysis made and they could say with "absolute certainty" that underneath there was only Thalia and no panties. Now you see why photographic "evidence" is admitted less and less in trials nowadays :D)

"I just found out today about the business with Mariah, and first it left me curious and I thought that she goes with Luis Miguel, who is Mexican. He is a man who knows me perfectly well, he knows who I am, the career that I have had. Besides, he knows me because of other circumstances. So then, I don't want you to come to me with stories. And that with Salma was because that morning, while I was getting ready to go to the baptism of Itati's sons, I heard someone say on television: Ay! Don't touch me, you are hurting me, and I peered out and saw Salma on the screen. Then, when I went out to greet the press at the baptism, they told me that they thought I was about to do the same as Salma and my brain automatically began to repeat what she said and I let it out….but it wasn't to hurt anybody or anything like that."

Thalia is funny. In fact, she always repeats that part of her happiness is because she takes everything with a lot of humor. And that humor is multiplied when she gets together with her sisters and her mother. "We get along divinely," she tells. "Just great. We are a very united family. I remember that we read Cristina's book while we were sun tanning in Acapulco and each one read a little piece…and how much we enjoyed it! I am still very close to my mother. She has her room in my house in New York. She has the house that I gave her here in Miami, and when I am here she comes to be with me."

--What do you advise a woman who like you has mixed two cultures for love, so that the whole family will get along well?

"In my case, I have taught my husband Spanish and my mother speaks certain phrases of English. If you hear them, every day they have the same chat on the telephone: Hola, suegruita comou estaas? And my mother answers him: Good, good, Tomito, everything is good. Where is Thali?…Eylla está aquí, espéruame, te passou a Thali…The day that they go outside of there they will not know what to say to each other. The trick is to take everything calmly and with humor. I have taken everything with humor and it has carried me a long way."

--Is this CD with banda a product of nostalgia for your country?

"Of all the Latinos, we Mexicans are the most nationalistic, and wherever we are we take out the flag and the tequila. The fact that I am here in this new stage of my life and to be travelling, it leaves a hole in you. As if I need my culture. An executive of EMI proposed it to me and it was like a bucket of refreshing water. I, as a Mexican in another country, I want to hear this. This is going out for all the Mexicans who have left my country searching for their dream."

--How is your life as a Mexican in New York? What do you advise the newly-arrived foreigners?

"During this trip to Miami, I encountered a friend who came from Mexico and she brought me a whole bag of my favorite candy. Chilitos, candies that are slightly sour…The milk candy called cajeta. I am the worst cook. Even lemonade comes out salty for me, I burn water, I don't even know how to make rice or a noodle soup. The only thing that I know how to make is guacamole, because you just smash the avocado. I call Mexico a lot. I have very good communication systems which save me money. I have those cards, where you dial some numbers beforehand…They are the greatest! I advise immigrants three things: Always be in contact with your family, at least once a week, so as to not lose your base. Make a friend of someone who is in the same situation as you so that you can help each other. And try to understand the culture and the possibilities that this country offers to improve your life, which are certainly many.

Thalia looks happy. Next year she plans to launch a new record where she will have English songs and she will start up a world tour. She does not want babies for now. She wants to continue promoting, creating, selling. In the door, the other man in her life, Scott, the hefty bodyguard (R.I.P.) who follows her and takes care of the suite, does not suspect that tomorrow Thalia is going to put him in her video, Amor a la Mexicana, as the bartender.

--How uncomfortable is it to live with a bodyguard all the time?

"Those who know me almost as well as my mother are those (bodyguards) in Mexico, they have been with me always. They are five men who know when I am sad, happy, they get proud when they see the fans in my concerts. The people say: Ay! now she has a bodyguard because right now she has a new life, and that is a big lie. In Mexico it is necessary to have security people. Scottie, my guy here, draws more attention because he is huge. He is very nice."

--You say that Thalia Con Banda was for Mexicans who left to look for their dream. Did you find yours?

"I have suffered many blows to my heart, I have been very injured in the terrain of love, and these blows have made me strong and they have made me draw inside myself. I thought that happiness was to have a boyfriend, and that is false. I thought that happiness was to have the house of my dreams, and that is false. I thought that happiness was to be the most famous, and that is false. Happiness is to find yourself, and when you find that balance you have to reinforce it, meditating, talking with God a lot, invoking the image that you have of Him and smiling at Him. I accomplished my dream, and if I die tomorrow, I did all that I wanted. I made even my whims reality.

I'm home at last!

Press conference to introduce the Band CD was very revealing

(Note: Due to technical difficulties, our video clip of Thalia at the press conference has been delayed. Please continue to watch this section to find out when it will be viewable. Thank You - TACS)

Despite the fact that Thalía vigorously defends her roots in her album with banda, the interpreter of Amor a la mexicana is almost forgetting how to speak Spanish. This was demonstrated in the press conference which took place on Monday night, because on several occasions she pronounced words which had nothing to do with Spanish. (Note: We assume that the author is making a joke about the "Anglicization" of Thalía)

"My life took a sudden turn upon my falling in love with my husband, and to be torn away from my Mexico. When you are somewhere else, you miss things and you feel this empty place. For me, it was a necessity to record something with banda."

For this reason, Mrs. Mottola disregards whether people criticize her for her incursion into this genre. "I am entering a territory which demands great respect and heart. The people have responded well."

I missed you all. Tell me how you have been.

I am very happy right now. Life is almost perfect for me.

Sorry, no Thalita yet. Maybe next year.

In the meantime,

Questioned about why she did not record songs which were not previously published, she explained: "I had the opportunity to bring together an album of Thalía's greatest hits with banda, in order to introduce myself in countries where they already identify me. It is a baby which has given me great satisfaction."

At the same time, she stated that she does not seek to be the "Queen of the Gruperas": "I do not intend to catalog myself with a word. One can express more. The only thing I am looking for is to share my talent."

Let's enjoy our time together

Thank you for helping me make this album a success yet again.

Click away paparazzi

I can't ask for anything more.

It is important to mention that Thalía at every moment showed herself as on the defensive and evasive, such as what occurred when someone asked if she had put on her resume when asking for work in Hollywood that she "talked with a dog." (Note: More about questions like this and the people who ask them in our coverage of Thalía's interview from Cristina Magazine, coming soon.)

"I am proud of having talked with a dog in one of my telenovelas. Thanks to him they know me in Africa. Although others might be embarrassed, right? Whatever movie offer is important. Mexico is at a very good level, if they invite me I would be delighted. I would like to act with Robert DeNiro."

Do you want to hear one of the songs from the new cd?

Here we go!

Wonderful Thalia!

Sheer perfection!

As far as her private life, she made it very clear that her husband, Tommy Mottola's, past with Mariah Carey does not matter to her. "I met him under new circumstances. I admire her (Mariah Carey) a lot, she has a unique talent. I hope that she recovers from the breakdown which she had, that she sells many records and that she is very happy," she added

Thalía also said that she never imaged being so happy at the side of her present husband. "He is an intelligent person, he respects what I do and think. We are happy, I never imagined having such a person, he has been a gift from God, he respects the Latin culture and music."

Like this?

Another feather in your cap Thalia

Thank you, thank you.

For all the blessings Lord!

Of course somebody had to ask her: what about the baby and when? And she responded with a nervous laugh. "I do my homework daily, but right now I am giving birth to this record, I am preparing the next album and a tour of Europe and Latin America which will close in Mexico City, in the National Auditorium. I hope that a baby will come next year."

She did not want to go deeply into the passing away of her mother-in-law and the death of her bodyguard. She said that is was painful, but she said "I am preparing for whatever hurricane may come."

A flower for my fans. This all I can say thank you with.

I will never forget my roots

As far as the Latin Grammys, she declared herself to be completely apolitical. "The Grammy is a platform, an opportunity to display our culture in other countries. Instead of being divided we ought to unite and support each other more." Concerning her nomination, she added, "Having so much talent I already feel like a winner. There are many Latinos driving the industry, such as Christina Aguilar. If we work as an army we can accomplish many things."

Of the concert that she has anticipated for September, she advanced: "We are working with the record company, my manager, and the government. We are looking for a convenient day. It is a dream that I have, I want to give it to the people for free."

"There is another impresario flirting with us for huge dances. I would love to perform in one and to share the stage with Banda El Recodo. Or, if we can't do that, to start a new banda group that will be called La Talismania".

(NOTE: Thalía may end up changing her mind about performing with Banda El Recodo. Their lead singer, Julio Preciado, gave an extremely negative review of her Banda CD in El Universal on September 2nd: "Thalía sounds exactly the same in her new record and I believe that it is not worth anything for her to get involved with another genre." The singer who is also know as "the Giant of Banda" stated "I do not sound the same with banda as with mariachi, and that is good." Hmmm…it doesn't sound much like he's dying to be on the stage with Thalía.)

Speaking of acting, she stated that she is in talks with Valentín Pimstein, Salvador Mejía, and Carla Estrada. Nevertheless, she admitted that at present she wants to give priority to her music.

"At this time I do not intend to get into telenovelas. If I return, I want something that is new and that sets an example to follow."

Finally, she said that she is preparing a pop album, which will be ready for next year.

A Mexican fiesta was organized by her record company to mark the achievement of a Gold Record for the high sales of her album Thalía con banda, Grandes Exitos.

(NOTE: Here is a clip of the presentation of the gold record to Thalía by EMI Mexico, and a part of the press conference. The voice you hear on the Despierta America video is Luis Magaña, one of Thalía's first agents after she was no longer with Alfredo Diaz-Ordaz.)

Thalía talks about her world tour, the Grammy, and her marriage

Mexico City.- Far from being in the middle of the speculations about Mariah Carey, the ex-wife of her husband, or about Paulina Rubio, her rival for the Latin Grammy, Thalía offered a press conference this Monday where she spoke about the love she is experiencing, about Hollywood, about possible motherhood, and about her future projects.

In the official presentation of her record "Thalía con Banda, Grandes Éxitos", the singer received a Gold Record for having already sold 75,000 units, and celebrated the sum total of happiness that she is experiencing as a woman.

"My marriage with Tommy (Mottola) has been the best thing that has happened to me in my life. He is a very intelligent man, he respects what I think, what I do, and who I am. He is 100% dedicated to his work and I never imagined having so much love."

"We are always practicing in order to 'write to the stork' (a Mexican phrase that means the couple is going to plan for a baby) and the most probable is that we will have a child next year. I would be delighted if it were a Thaliíta," commented the interpreter of "Arasando".

"I met Tommy when she (Mariah Carey) was no longer in his life, she was an outsider at that time. I am sorry for what is happing to her, I really hope that she soon overcomes her problem with depression. I admire this girl very much, I wish her the best, and may she sell millions of records for my company, Virgin Records," said the singer.

She did not want to go deeply into her personal life. With respect to her 30th birthday, which was last Sunday, she commented that it was eclectic, because despite being a day for celebrating, last week her mother-in-law died, and the day before her bodyguard also lost his life. "I was full of contrasting feelings, eclectic," she stated.

With the singer "Amor a la Mexicana" banda version on the radio and with the proposal to make a telenovela with Carla Estrada, Salvador Mejía, or Valentín Pimstein, Thalía said that for the moment she wants to dedicate herself to her banda record and her music.

"I want to finish writing the songs for the pop album, those which I am doing in English, maybe to enter the United States, and I am not sure about finalizing a television project," she stated.

Her management and the record company are planning what will be her first world tour, which will close in the National Auditorium around the middle of next year, she added. (Note: The National Auditorium in Mexico City has just completed a multi-million dollar renovation and will be ready for her just in time.)

Concerning her nomination for the Latin Grammy for her record Arrasando, the also actress explained that she does not want to get into controversy with the subject of her companions, who in turn are also very talented.

"Since the moment in which we are nominated we already won, in respect to the work of Pau, of Laura, and how good that we are the Latinas that we are. I am very enthusiastic about my presentation there because it is a display case for international projection," she commented.

During the chat, she took the opportunity to drink a tequila, embrace her family, and trade anecdotes with Mario Bezares, whom she met when she was in Timbiriche.

Thalía to appear in a live concert with the top Banda group?

Source: El Norte, August 31, 2001
By: Mary Hernandez
TW Correspondent: Tonchi

Monterrey, México.-Thalía might be able to share the stage at the Expo Guadalupe with Los Tigres del Norte this coming September 29. Through her company representative in the United States and her record label, Emi Music, Tommy Mottola's wife expressed her desire to take part a massive event now that she has released the record Thalía con Banda, Grandes Éxitos.

Servando Cano - will he be the key to Thalia's cross-over success? "The negotiations with the singer's people were initiated 3 weeks ago. Yes, we arrived at an arrangement and I already told them that the first place in which she could take part is one of the biggest events, it is the Expo. In addition, I spoke with the Tigres del Norte people yesterday and they told me that they definitely could come up with a reasonable price, that it was good business for everybody that they include her in the cast," said impresario Servando Cano.

( Note: To get further information about why Thalia is so interested in performing in Monterrey and why she is talking to Servando Cano, read what Grammy.com has to say.)

This is the first time that Señora Mottola has been present at an event of this type, and despite that, the director of Representantes Artísticos Serca has confidence that the public will accept her, independent of the fact that her music genre is pop.

"She has an audience that is of the people. She may sing pop, but in the novelas that she has made she is a poor girl. She knows how to communicate with those people, which is who goes to the dances to see us. For this reason I was eager to do a contract with her, I believe that it will definitely work," Cano stated.

With the national projection that Thalía has achieved after her wedding with the head of Sony Music, and the representation of a US company (this would probably be Randy Hoffman), the grupero impresario has offered her agents, upon solidifying the negotiations for the appearances that the artist will make, that she will get the largest events in Mexico, such as Monterrey, Guadalajara, México City, León, Juárez, and Aguascalientes.

"Next week we will have something definite, if I have to travel to New York for the negotiations then I will go and we will discuss it. In the meantime I will send you information about the dances and videos of the most important places where the Tigres have appeared."

For Cano, it is the challenge of his career as impresario to close this negotiation, which upon becoming firm will give him the precedent to invite other artists to appear in this type of scenario. The Monterrey impresario considers that, more than affecting the grupero wave, the incursion of pop singers into this popular style will benefit them.

"If a pop singer enters into the grupero thing it means that the movement is o.k. Paulina Rubio recorded a song with mariachi that went well. I believe that the one of Thalía's is going to be a complete success. That gives us more strength."

Tigres del Norte considering recording with Thalía

Due to the supposed desire of Thalía to record with Los Tigres del Norte, Jorge Hernández, lead singer of the group, did not hesitate to assure that should they succeed in firming up plans for the duet there would be a great opportunity for both interpreters of Mexican popular music. So Thalía is such a favorite that even the Tigres del Norte want to sing with her

"It would be interesting to do an original song, to create something beautiful (with her), something at really could surprise the public, we would look for the best artistic producers. It would be very interesting for us to join with her, since she is very important in her music style and we would collaborate with whomever fits with us, it would be fantastic for music in general and for the grupero movement," commented Hernández.

During the press conference to present their most recent record material, Los Tigres del Norte said that they seek to unify and familiarize the migrants all over America with the US society, through their record Uniendo Fronteras (Joining Borders).

"With this record we talk a little bit about the history of Mexico, when the gringos took Texas away from us, and New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada. We only want to tell our countrymen not to let them mistreat you, learn English in order to defend yourself, and that we are more Americans than the gringos," said Jorge.

(NOTE: The members of Los Tigres del Norte described their meeting with Thalia on El Gordo y La Flaca last week, and they were totally overwhelmed just by being close to her. One of the singers said he started having heart palpitations that it took him a day to recover from :D)

Univision.com gave Thalía a birthday party too

Although Thalía cancelled her 30th birthday party in Mexico City, she cut a cake in Miami previously. TV Notas accompanied Thalía to the chat which was given on August 20 at Univision.com and during the time she was there she not only answered questions but celebrated her birthday as well, a week ahead of time, in the company of the online crew and her mother, Doña Yolanda.

Birthday greetings to Thalia from her univision family

As always, the singer swept everybody away with her beauty and pleasant disposition and broke the record with a chat which logged in 8,300 people, 300 more than were there in the chat with Maria Celeste Arrarás (Note: She is a hostess of Primer Impacto). Although the cyber date was for 7:00 in the evening, it began 15 minutes after that since Thalía was filming a special for Sábado Gigante and arrived late. (Note: Other fans have told us that Thalía arrived one and a half hours late, not 15 minutes. Since we were not able to get into the chat, we cannot confirm either time.)

The cake still needs a mexican touch

Don't shove, don't shove ! I'll finish my cake! I swear!

Thalia is a good sport. In Mexico they have a repulsive tradition, similar to what newlyweds in the US do to each other at the reception, where friends shove the cake into the face of the guest of honor. Knowing what is coming, most opt to bend over the cake and take the first bite without cutting a piece, but even so they get their faces rudely shoved into the middle of the cake, which is both degrading and ruins a lot of the desert being served. In this picture, we can see Thalia reacting pleasantly as one of the Univision.com staff enforces the tradition. One can only imagine what the late Scotty Galin would have done to the person laying hands on Thalia that way.

There goes my diet ! After the chat ended, they cut the cake, and when she saw it she took a little doll from a flower arrangement that was on the table and put it on top, because according to her it need a Mexican touch. A dozen people, among them Cachita, Tony Dandrades, and some cameramen and light technicians, sang "Las Mañanitas" to her and "Happy Birthday." Then they cut the cake. Although Thalía is not in the habit of eating sweets in order to conserve her slender figure, she ate an entire slice.

On August 23, only three days after Thalía attended the chat, Tommy Mottola received the sad news that his mother had died of advanced age; she had passed away in New York, apparently from heart problems. Nobody had wanted to make any statement whatsoever and they have kept this matter totally sealed. So, once the music magnate found out what had happened, he cancelled all his personal and work commitments in order to go there to the burial of his mother in New York, and at his side was his inseparable wife.

Naturally, upon hearing of her mother-in-law's death, Thalía cancelled the birthday party which was planned in Mexico City, at the side of family members and several artist friends. She preferred to be in mourning and accompany her husband in such an unfortunate moment.

First pics of Thalía in Sabado Gigante

Due to one of the quirks of journalistic deadlines, TV y Novelas has published photos taken during Thalía's performances on Sabado Gigante, which, although filmed on the same day of her chat on Univision.com, have yet to appear on television. Not knowing that the broadcast would be postponed, the magazines had undoubtedly scheduled this article and had no compelling reason to pull it, and so we are treated to an exclusive view. Sorry that the photos are basically very poor quality, but we hope that you will enjoy the gallery we have made of the article.

Welcome back Thalia!!!

Bringing a new definition to the Banda style of singing

Thalia has reinvented herself yet again

The text of the TV y Novelas article was taken from comments made during her chat and not from anything she said on Sabado Gigante.

Hopefully we in the US will get to see Thalía's performance soon, but nothing has been released about either why it was postponed or when the new schedule is. Sabado Gigante is a crushingly boring program, and not something we all intend to watch in the hopes that Thalía will show up :D

Better late than never

Source: Univision.com, El Gordo y La Flaca, Univision

TW Correspondents: Lu & Tonchi

Would you say she is 30 already? Thalía finally got to celebrate her 30th birthday with family members and friends. Her mother-in-law passed away last Thursday and it seemed that Thalía had gone without blowing out her 30 candles. But no, her sister Laura Zapata found time to organize a surprise party in a restaurant and sing Happy Birthday to her on Thursday night, four days after her actual birthday on last Sunday, August 26.

Although far from her husband, Tommy Mottola, Thalía blew out her 30 little candles accompanied by her family and close friends, after they had not celebrated her birthday together for two years. (Note: This is not an accurate statement. On both birthdays since her marriage, Tommy Mottola has footed the huge bill to fly her entire family to wherever the party was taking place. We remind you of the party on the yacht in New York harbor, but you may not know that on another occasion he had her family flown to the Bahamas to celebrate with them. Let's give Tommy credit for these loving gestures that he has gladly made, and Univision.com should certainly be aware that their statement is false.)

The guests began arriving at the restaurant located to the south of Mexico city at 8:30 p.m. and were received with some "margaritas" (the famous Mexican drink prepared with tequila). The guest of honor appeared at almost 11:30 p.m. (late as always :D) accompanied by her sister Ernestina, affectionately known as Titi. Upon her arrival, Thalía was received to the sound of mariachis, who interpreted the typical "Mañanitas" (the Mexican birthday song) and was congratulated by all present, but with special affection on the part of Itatí Cantoral, with whom she maintains a good friendship since they recorded the novela María la del Barrio, a tie which became even closer when they baptized the twin sons of the Santamarina Cantorals.

Among the guests were found María Victoria, Carmen Salinas, Carlos Ponce, Yuri and her husband Rodrigo, Itatí and Eduardo Santamarina, who enjoyed the appetizers which were offered in the celebration, since there was not a formal dinner or menu.

Thalía left the restaurant at 2 in the morning, but she had to do it through the kitchen and accompanied by a dozen bodyguards, since the main entrance was milling with reporters and photographers who were waiting for the artist to get a picture of her. And she stated continuously that she did not want to give any more interviews because she was celebrating her birthday.

Laura Zapata gives Thalía a surprise birthday party

Thalía was surprised with a Mexican fiesta to celebrate her 30th birthday at the side of all her family, since the party planned for last weekend was cancelled due to the death of her husband's mother.

"María Félix told Estela Moctezuma -owner of the restaurant- that it was going to be my sister's birthday, then she spoke to me to tell me that she wanted to give her a party and so we had the fiesta yesterday. She was really very overwhelmed with attentions", commented Laura Zapata, who organized the party.

Accompanied by heavy security and by her mother, Yolanda Miranda, the singer and actress got out of a blue Suburban and entered the restaurant El Candelero on Thursday night, where Itatí Cantoral with her husband Eduardo Santamarina, and Itatí's mother, Itatí Zucchi, and her brother José had been waiting for her since 9:00 p.m. Also present were Ernestina Sodi, sister to the guest of honor, and her grandmother, as well as actors Carlos Ponce, María Victoria, Sergio Sendel, Víctor Noriega, Anette Cuburu, César Bono, Yuri, Eugenia Ríos, Luz María Aguilar, Gilda Deneken, Rafael Herrería, empresario of the Plaza de Toros México (the famous Mexico City bullring); Salvador Mejía, producer of Rosalinda; Mitzy, designer to the stars, and some executives from Televisa, besides Diego Shoenning.

(NOTE: The first actors listed may seems like unlikely guests, but they are currently working with Itatí on a novela, "Sin Pecado Concibido." We would also like to mention several ironies in the guest list: Diego Shoenning was Thalía's first "serious" boyfriend, and Rafael Herrería was the person photographed with Thalía in the Plaza de Toros way back in December 1998 when the whole world thought HE was the mysterious boyfriend that Thalía was rumored to be seeing. We would also like to add that Sergio Sendel is the ultimate villain to ever be seen in a novela for his part in "Ramona" and that you should all watch for him because he is brilliant at what he portrays. And besos for Victor Noriega, who is still one of our favorites even though his first starring novela, "Por Un Beso" is a dog.)

The owner of the place was in charge of the menu, which consisted of Mexican appetizers such as quesadillas, pambazos, beef tacos, sopes, chicharrón, and other a la carte specialties, plus the favorite drink, tequila.

Accompanied by her boyfriend, Jaime Valdés, the villainess of "La Intrusa" said that her sister had a fine time in a very Mexican environment such as she had always enjoyed, and even more now that she resides with her husband in New York and Miami.

With mariachi music in the background, they danced, made toasts, and indulged the artist during the fiesta which lasted until 2:00 am on Friday.

Thalia's bodyguard, Scott Galin, is laid to rest in Miami

Source: El Gordo y La Flaca, Univision
Broadcast: August 30, 2001
TW Correspondent: Tonchi

El Gordo always referred to him as "Gorrillón" (the big gorilla), the magazines called him the "calvoespaldas" (created by combining the Spanish for "bald" and half of the word for "bodyguard", but Thalia just called him Scotty. Graciela Mori once wrote an article that called him "the other man" that Thalia was seeing. He used to play for the NFL, which you could easily believe because of his size, but his ambition was to be an actor; he actually got parts in several Hollywood movies, and he appears prominently in the "Amor a la Mexicana Banda" video. Although all business while on the job, he was nevertheless known as a pleasant and courteous man. He had a wife and a 15-year-old son. Scotty always kept Thalia out of harms way. Our thanks to him will not be enough

Pulled alive from the wreckage of that plane in the Bahamas, he was talking coherently with his rescuers, begging them to forget about him, he would be fine, just please find Aaliyah and save her. But there was no one else to save and, tragically, Scott did not survive the trip to a hospital.

He was buried Thursday in Miami in a private ceremony. Among those who sent remembrances were many famous stars who he had worked for, including Ricky Martin. Thalia and Tommy sent condolences and their regrets that due to her schedule in Mexico they would not be able to attend. May he rest in peace. It will just not seem the same without him, always there in the background.
